Myocarditis is one of the most serious complications after COVID-19. Cases of such reactions have also occurred after vaccination against the coronavirus. However, as emphasized by prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska, the risk of myocarditis is 11 times higher after infection with SARS-CoV-2 than after vaccination against COVID-19. The virologist cites a study of 43 million people in England.
- Myocarditis is one of the most serious complications after COVID-19 (and the passage of any other viral infection)
- It also develops in young people who have not had heart problems before and are generally quite healthy
- The risk of myocarditis after vaccination against COVID-19 is very small compared to the risk that may arise after infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus – says Martina Patone, specialist in medical statistics

Myocarditis – a complication after COVID-19
Myocarditis may be a complication after vaccination against COVID-19, but it happens very rarely, as was noted, among others, by Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) in Atlanta, USA. Generally, however, it is caused by a viral infection, such as an influenza virus. Such a pathogen attacks the walls of the heart muscle and may cause its temporary or permanent damage. It manifests itself as a weakening of the strength of contraction of the heart muscle or a disturbance of its electrical stimulation.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), myocarditis was detected in 19-10 people out of 20 even before the COVID-100 pandemic. residents. With the emergence of COVID-19, there could be many more cases.
This is indicated by the latest research published in the journal «Circulation». They were applied to people vaccinated in the UK as soon as the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began, i.e. from December 1, 2020 to December 15, 2021. Studies have confirmed that although there are complications in the form of myocarditis after vaccination, infection itself, they are much more common.
«Another study confirms something that is obvious: the risk of myocarditis is much higher (as much as 11 times) after infection with SARS-CoV-2 than after vaccination against COVID-19. The study group consists of nearly 43 million people aged 13 and older (England) “- points out on Twitter Prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska from the Department of Virology and Immunology at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
The risk of complications after vaccination is very small
This is confirmed in a comment by the lead author of the study, Martin Patone, a specialist in medical statistics at the Nuffield Department of Primary Healthe Care Sciences.

– We analyzed vaccination data in England in the first 12 months after vaccination started, that the risk of myocarditis after vaccination against COVID-19 is very small compared to the type of inflammation that can arise after infection with SARS-CoV -2 – he points out.
In the vaccination campaign in England in 2021, various types of vaccines against COVID-19 were used, both the so-called vector developed by AstraZeneca and produced in the mRNA technology. These vaccines can now be used in many countries in children over six months of age.
Only people 13 years of age or older who received at least one dose of the preparation were included in the studies. People vaccinated with three doses (two standard doses and one so-called booster or booster dose) were also included. Of the 43 million vaccinated subjects analyzed, 21 million patients received a booster. 6 million subjects were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus before or after vaccination.
