Most adolescents recover quickly from the COVID-19 vaccine-related, rarely occurring myocarditis. Symptoms are usually mild.
- Cases of myocarditis following COVID-19 vaccination have been reported mainly among young men
- New research shows that this complication is rare and is usually mild
- It is not yet known whether the inflammation of the heart muscle just after vaccination may have an effect in the long term

Side effects of COVID-19 vaccines
Myocarditis is a rare but serious disease that can weaken the heart and disrupt its electrical system responsible for regular contractions.
Usually, as the authors of a new paper published in Circulation explain, it arises in the course of a viral infection. However, the reasons may also be different.
– In June this year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices reported a possible link between the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine and myocarditis, especially in people under 39 years of age. However, follow-up studies indicate that cases of myocarditis associated with COVID-19 vaccination are rare and usually mild Says Donald. M. Lloyd-Jones, president of the American Heart Association, who was not associated with the study described in the publication.

– For the most part, studies still show that the benefits of vaccination against COVID-19 – 91 percent. effective in preventing complications of severe COVID-19, including hospitalization and death – further outweighing the very low risk of side effects, including myocarditis, ‘he adds.
According to the authors of the new study, post-vaccination cases of the disease mainly affected teenage and young adult males.
Earlier studies have already shown a link between the disease and other vaccinations, such as smallpox, the researchers note.
While currently available data on symptoms, disease severity, and short-term effects are limited, we decided to investigate a large group of probable cases of this disease that are associated with COVID-19 vaccination in adolescents and adults younger than 21 years in North America. says the co-author of the study, prof. Jane W. Newburger.
Researchers analyzed data from 26 pediatric centers in the US and Canada on patients under 21 years of age with symptoms of a disease that appeared up to one month after vaccination and the results of the study.
In total, researchers assessed 139 cases of young people aged 12-20.
They described a number of dependencies.
- 90 percent patients are male, with an average age of 15,8 years.
- Almost every case of the disease appeared after vaccination with an mRNA-based preparation.
- Symptoms appeared within two days of vaccination on average.
- The most common symptom was chest pain (99,3% of patients), fever (30,9%) and shortness of breath (27,3%).
- Approx. a fifth of the patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, but no one died.
- Most people were hospitalized for 2-3 days.
- More than two-thirds of patients who underwent MRI had traces of inflammation or damage to the heart muscle.
- Almost 19 percent Left ventricular function was impaired, but later heart function returned to normal in all patients.
“ These data suggest that in most cases, myocarditis in people under the age of 21, possibly related to COVID-19 vaccinations, is mild and quickly resolves, ” says the author of the study, Prof. Dongngan T. Truong.
– We are very happy with such a recovery. However, we await more research to better understand the long-term effects in patients who have suffered from COVID-19 vaccination-related myocarditis. We also need to investigate the risk factors and the mechanism behind this rare complication, he adds.

The authors of the study also pay attention to its limitations. For example, it did not check what percentage of people who were vaccinated had myocarditis.
In addition, the people included in the analysis were patients who came to the hospital, which means that they could have had more serious symptoms than other patients who did not go to the clinic.
– It is important that the public and health professionals have information about the early signs, symptoms and course of myocarditis recovery, especially as these vaccines are increasingly available to children – emphasizes Prof. Truong.
The researchers, summarizing their results, point out that they confirm the safety of the vaccinations they also urge.
