Mushrooms are a treasury of vitamins and minerals. However, there is a negative opinion about them all the time. We will try to find out the truth about these inconspicuous mushrooms.

Mushroom lovers of all kinds appreciate mushrooms for their neutral taste, unobtrusive smell and firm structure. The price is also not the worst, so what’s the problem? Well, I have heard the opinion many times that mushrooms, and especially champignons, are worthless and in fact might not exist. Fortunately, this is not true. Below I will try to prove why.

1. They are rich in antioxidanty, which help in the fight against diseases, improve the body’s immunity and scavenge free radicals that damage cells. Research results published in SCI’s Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture confirm that mushrooms have the same antioxidant properties as much more expensive, highly valued mushrooms such as Maitake and Matsutake.

2. They fight viruses. Research published in the Jurnal of Nutrition suggests that mushrooms may support immune system function by increasing the production of antiviral substances and other proteins that are released by cells to protect and repair tissues.

3. Research results published in the Journal of Medicinal Food show anti-cancer effect mushroom polysaccharides in an animal model. Both isolated fractions (ABP – 1 and ABP – 2) had the ability to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer. Scientists emphasize the importance of mushrooms in inhibiting the activity of aromatase and estrogen biosynthesis, which reduces the growth of tumor cells. There were also no carcinogenic properties of mushrooms (Cancer Letters).

4. They reduce the level of bad cholesterol and glucose in the blood. Mushrooms contain large amounts of dietary fiber and the aforementioned antioxidant substances, including vitamin C, D, folates; and polyphenols that may help treat people with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

5. They are a good source of Vitamin D, 100 g contain 1,94 mcg. Recently, there has been a lot of talk about vitamin D deficiency and its consequences (e.g. the risk of cancer), so any product rich in vitamin D should be worth attention.
