Mucosolvan inhalations is a mucolytic drug that reduces the secretion flowing down the back of the throat and in the respiratory tract. It is indicated especially in acute, chronic diseases of the bronchi and lungs with the participation of residual secretions in them.

Mucosolvan for inhalation – composition
The basic dose, i.e. 2 ml of Mucosolvan inhalation fluid, contains 15 mg of ambroxol hydrochloride (Ambroxoli hydrochloridum). Auxiliary substances are benzalkonium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen phosphate, purified water and citric acid monohydrate.
Mucosolvan for inhalation – drug dosage
The use of Mucosolvan inhalations should be carried out as prescribed by the doctor. The solution is suitable for use in modern inhalers, but should not be used with a steam inhaler. The recommended dose of liquid can be measured using the dropper – the bottle is turned upside down and tapped lightly.
For children after six and adults the standard dose is 2 to 3 ml for one inhalation, and 1-2 treatments can be performed during the day. Little patients before the age of six can use up to 2 ml for inhalation and also perform 1-2 treatments a day.
Inhalation with Mucosolvan should not be performed at bedtime due to its controlled cough reflex which is a desirable cleansing effect after inhalation.
Each inhalation should be done carefully. The fluid should be warmed to body temperature, then the nebulizer should be started and its patency checked. Asthma patients can take medication immediately prior to inhalation. Do not hyperventilate or take too deep breaths – this may cause a coughing reflex.
Mucosolvan inhalations can be mixed with saline with caution in a one-to-one ratio (1: 1). You mustn’t add to it emic salt or cromoglycanic acid, as they increase the pH of the solution above the recommended standard, which may result in sediment or cloudy liquid. As a result, Mucosolvan inhalations will no longer be suitable for use.
Mucosolvan for inhalation – storage method
The drug can be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children. After opening the bottle, the product should be used within 12 months.
Mucosolvan for inhalation – contraindications
Some people should not use Mucosolvan or be especially careful. The main contraindications to taking Mucosolvan solution for inhalation are:
- allergy to ambroxol or other ingredients of the preparation;
- hereditary intolerance to any component of the drug.
As a preservative in Mucosolvan was used benzalkonium chloride, which may cause bronchospasm for patients suffering from respiratory hypersensitivity.
The preparation should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy or during breastfeeding. In case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, consult a doctor. If the patient has a disturbed cough reflex or problems with ciliary cleansing, the use of mucolytics, including Mucosolvan inhalations, is not recommended.
People suffering from chronic renal failure or severe liver failure should consult a doctor before using Mucosolvan. Problems with the functioning of these organs may lead to an increased accumulation of the preparation’s metabolites in the body.
Mucosolvan for inhalation – interactions with other drugs
The simultaneous use of antibiotics (including amoxicillin, erythromycin or cefuroxime) during inhalation may increase their concentration in sputum and bronchopulmonary secretions.
Medicines that inhibit the cough reflex (e.g. codeine) act in opposition to Mucosolvan, so taking them in combination with this preparation is not recommended. Inhalations that dilute secretions and increase its volume make it necessary to clear the respiratory tract. The use of antitussive drugs prevents expectoration of mucus diluted with inhalations, and the accumulation and retention of secretions is a dangerous phenomenon.
