Mucofluid is a drug used in family medicine and otolaryngology to treat nasal obstruction. The preparation affects the respiratory system – it facilitates the removal of residual nasal secretions. Mucofluid is available as an aerosol and can only be obtained with a prescription.

Mucofluid – drug action
Mucofluid is a preparation whose active substance is mesna, What is mesna? It is a substance that has a mucolytic effect similar to that of acetylcysteine. Mucofluid causes the mucus in our airways to be smaller, and the residual secretion liquefies, which in turn improves the cilia of the respiratory epithelium. As a result, the respiratory tract is cleared and expectoration is easier. Mensa, applied topically in the form of a nasal spray, takes effect approximately five minutes after application. The active substance of Mucofluid – mensa, can also be used during cancer chemotherapy (protectively) and prevents damage to the urinary tract mucosa.
Indications for the use of the drug Mucofluid
The active substance of Mucofluid is meatywhich influences the liquefaction of broncho-tracheal secretions. The aerosol is used for the symptomatic treatment of nasal obstruction caused by too much or too sticky nasal discharge.
- Dosage Mucofluid: the preparation is in the form of a nasal spray. A special dispenser should be attached to the container, depending on whether the drug will be used in a child or an adult. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the drug, as it may be harmful to life or health. If in doubt about the use of the preparation, consult your doctor. Usually, one dose is administered in each nostril, four times a day, until symptoms disappear.
Note: protect your eyes from contact with sprayed aerosol.
Mucofluid and contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Mucofluid are:
- hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
- asthma without the accumulation of excessive amounts of mucus and accompanying obstruction of the airways,
- asthmatic state.

1. If you have asthma, consult your doctor before using Mucofluid.
2. In patients with asthma, the drug increases the risk of bronchospasm.
3. Store Mucofluid at room temperature.
4. There is no information on the influence of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machines / machines.
5. Pregnant women may use Mucofluid only if necessary and after prior consultation with a doctor.
6. Nursing women should not use the preparation. If, however, it is necessary to take the drug, feeding should be discontinued.

The use of Mucofluid may lead to a false-positive result in laboratory tests for ketones and sulphites.
Mucofluid – side effects
Warning: side effects do not have to occur in all users of the drug! The benefits of taking Mucofluid are generally greater than the side effects.
Mucofluid can cause:
- cough,
- irritation of the nasal mucosa,
- in patients with asthma: bronchospasm,
- rash
- erythema,
- hives
- itching
- angioedema.
