A study of over 6,2 million patients found that there are no serious health effects that could be linked to COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. A paper on this subject was published in September in the JAMA journal.
- Ultimately, the study is to cover up to 12 million vaccinated people. So far, the results for over 6 million vaccinated persons have been presented
- Scientists looked at 23 potential health effects. this list includes, among others Guillain-Barré syndrome or myocarditis
- They were selected because they had been considered in previous studies as particularly worrying effects of vaccination against COVID-19

The authors of the analysis are scientists from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Kaiser Permanent consortium. As they say, The results of the study, which will target 12 million people, are so far reassuring. For now, data covering the period from mid-December 2020 to the end of June 2021 have been presented.
“The whole world has faith in vaccines to end the COVID-19 pandemic. They must be effective and safe. Our role is to supervise and monitor these preparations, ”says lead author Dr. Nicola Klein.
Are the vaccines safe? Over 6 million respondents
In their analysis, the researchers compared specific health events among all people vaccinated with mRNA preparations during the first 3 weeks and 3-6 weeks after receiving the vaccine. The total number of subjects evaluated was 6,2 million for the first dose and 5,7 million for the second dose. Additionally, these participants were compared with unvaccinated patients who constituted the control group.
23 potential health effects were looked at. They were selected because they had been considered in previous studies as particularly worrying effects of vaccination against COVID-19. These were, among others neurological disorders (such as encephalomyelitis, seizures, and Guillain-Barré syndrome) cardiovascular problems (such as acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and pulmonary embolism) and others (e.g., Bell’s palsy, appendicitis, anaphylaxis, and multi-system inflammatory syndrome).
- How many adverse reactions have there been after vaccines?
Patients’ medical records were computer-searched and reviewed by analysts to verify without any doubt whether the medical problem had started before or after vaccination. Statistical analysis was then applied to determine if the number of incidents exceeded the alert threshold.
It turned out that of the health problems studied did not reach this threshold, although in some cases the results were less precise due to the very small number of cases.
Myocarditis after vaccination
The authors of the study emphasize that two of the most outrageous topics, myocarditis and pericarditis among young people, are not really a cause for concern.
Research 34 such cases were identified in patients aged 12 to 39 yearst: 85 percent of them were men, 82 percent. were hospitalized, and nearly all recovered by the time the results were published. The authors calculated that for this age group, the risk of myocarditis is 6,3 extra cases per million doses in the first week following vaccination. Previous studies show that a much higher risk of this event occurs after having COVID-19 than after the vaccine.

“The results of our study are a great example of how seriously the CDC takes vaccine safety and how thorough and transparent we are in our efforts to monitor these preparations,” said Dr. Tom Shimabukuro of the CDC Immunization Safety Office. – (…) COVID-19 vaccines are subject to the most intensive safety monitoring in US history. We believe immunization remains the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from a virus that has already taken millions of lives. ”
This study will continue for at least 2 more years. It will include subsequent newly vaccinated patients.
