Moviprep is a medical preparation that is usually given to patients before a colonoscopy. The purpose of administering this drug is to cleanse the intestines of any food residues. What are the ingredients of Moviprep and how do they work? What are the indications and contraindications for Moviprep?
Moviprep – drug characteristics and composition
Moviprep is a laxative drug that is most often used before medical procedures and tests such as endoscopy or radiology. Moviprep is a powdered preparation that dissolves in a liter of still water. It is very important that you carefully follow the dosing instructions for Moviprep. This medicine should be drunk according to the schedule that takes into account the time of the planned colonoscopy. If the colonoscopy is scheduled for one hour in the morning, two liters of the solution should be drunk in the evening. If, on the other hand, the procedure is to be performed closer to noon, one liter is drunk in the evening and the second one in the morning after waking up. Additionally, it should be remembered that after each dose of the preparation you need to drink at least one liter of clean, still water. The active substance in Moviprep is a polymer from the macrogol group. The other ingredients in Moviprep are ascorbic acid, potassium chloride, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate.
Moviprep – how the drug works
Oral use of Moviprep causes moderate diarrhea, which allows you to quickly clean the large intestine before the planned surgery. Macrogol, sodium sulfate and high doses of ascorbic acid cause an osmotic reaction in the intestine with laxative effects. Macrogol is a substance that increases the volume of stools, which in turn causes the large intestine to move through the neuromuscular pathways. Moviprep works by accelerating the passage of softened fecal masses through the colon. On the other hand, electrolytes, which are one of the ingredients of the preparation, prevent significant changes in the concentration of sodium, potassium and water, which protects the body against dehydration. Macrogol is a substance that remains virtually unchanged in the intestine and is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Moviprep – indications and contraindications
The main and most important indication for the use of Moviprep is colon cleansing prior to endoscopic or radiological procedures. Unfortunately, this preparation cannot be used by all patients who are preparing for the study. First of all, Moviprep cannot be used by people who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients of the drug. Moviprep must not be administered to people who are struggling with obstruction or perforation of the intestines or stomach. Contraindications to the use of Moviprep are gastric emptying disorders, pheylketonuria, dehydrogenase deficiency, toxic giant colon enlargement or serious complications of acute inflammation of the large intestine. Moviprep should also not be administered to patients who have been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Moviprep must not be used in unconscious patients.
