Fourth dose in Poland. What preparations do we have to choose from?

On July 11, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) officially issued the recommendation that European countries, including Poland, were waiting for. According to it, the second booster dose of vaccines against COVID-19 can be given to people aged 60 to 79.

Previously, the fourth dose in Poland could be taken by two groups: people aged 80+ and those over 12 years of age, but with impaired immunity, whose immune response to vaccination may be insufficient.

Registration for the fourth dose for the 60-79 group started on July 22. How many are eligible for these vaccinations?

«Tonight we issued 4,6 million e-referrals for vaccination against coronavirus for people 60+ and 12+ with immunodeficiency»- the health ministry informed on Friday on Twitter.

«After vaccination against COVID-19, we observe that the effectiveness of the vaccine is declining over time, as measured by the level of antibody concentration and the maintenance of this concentration over time. We give a booster dose of the vaccine to counteract the declining efficacy of the vaccine against COVID-19 and strengthen the antibody response and broaden the ability of the immune response to recognize more variants, ”explains MZ.

When administering the fourth dose, Pfizer and Moderna preparations are used. In both cases, these are mRNA vaccines, the same as when giving the third or first booster.

The Ministry of Health informs that «the same preparation should be taken as the one previously taken«While recalling that«if you had a different vaccine during your primary immunization (e.g. J&J) you can now get Pfizer as a booster«.

Who doesn’t get COVID-19?

The answer to the question ‘why some people never got COVID-19?’ can be divided into three parts.

According to Dr. Tara Hurst, a professor of biomedical sciences at Birmingham City University, a large proportion of people who say they have never had the coronavirus are likely to have had it asymptomatically. – I would say that it is a group of 45 to 90 percent. people – he says in an interview with “Birmingham Live”. The expert also emphasized that not everyone had a cough or lost the sense of smell and taste, therefore some people could consider coronavirus infection as a common cold.

Some people could actually avoid the infection. They owe it to their genes.

It might be because of their genetics, but they basically have an immune system that is very strong and fights the virus Dr. Hurst believes.

The opinion of the British expert is confirmed by prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska from the Department of Virology and Immunology at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. There are specific studies that have confirmed that genes largely determine whether the course of COVID-19 will be light or severe. Symptomatic infection after exposure to the virus can be avoided by a strong innate response explains the virologist and at the same time emphasizes that even in the case of people who have passed COVID-19 asymptomatically, symptoms related to long covid may appear.

The third group of people who could actually avoid infection were those with previously acquired immunity. There is a lot of research on this topic, and more recently, scientists from Imperial College London.

We have found that high levels of pre-existing T cells, created by the body when infected with other human coronaviruses, such as the common cold, can protect against COVID-19 infection says Rhia Kundu, the author of the study, quoted by US News & World Report.

The study looked at 52 people who lived with someone who contracted the coronavirus. From the data collected, it was found that those who were not infected had significantly higher levels of T cells from previous infections.
