Morning glory: planting and care

One of the most popular vines in landscape design is the morning glory. This decorative culture is distinguished by its rapid growth, attractive appearance and unpretentious character. Planting and caring for morning glory does not take much time and effort. Therefore, even a beginner in floriculture can grow a culture.

Ipomoea annual: description and photo

Deciduous climbing culture belongs to the bindweed family. The homeland of the plant is the tropical forests of America, but this vine can be found in almost all corners of the globe. The genus Imomei has more than 500 species, but only 25 of them are cultivated. Especially popular with Russian gardeners are such as Cairo, purple, tricolor and ivy morning glory.

A novice florist can also cope with planting and caring for morning glory.

Morning glory is a perennial culture. But when the temperature drops to + 10 ° C, the growth of the vine stops and the flower dies. Therefore, in the middle lane and northern regions, it is grown as an annual.

Vine shoots reach 5 meters in length. The stems are densely covered with heart-shaped leaves and fragrant inflorescences. Depending on the variety, the buds can be simple or double. Their shape is bell-shaped, reminiscent of a gramophone pipe. The petals are white, blue, red, pink. The flowering period lasts from late spring to the first frost. Due to its attractive appearance and rapid growth, liana is often grown to decorate supports and structures.

Planting and leaving in open ground

It is easier to grow a vine using a seed method. In this case, you can sow the planting material directly into the ground. But first it needs to be scarified. Or hold it in water for a day. For the plant, choose a well-lit but closed area with slightly acidic or neutral soil. Start planting in mid-May.

If you are going to grow seedlings, then sow the seeds in mid-April. And transplant young plants into open ground at the end of May

Liana is unpretentious, and caring for her is easy. Growing rules:

  • Morning glory does not tolerate both prolonged drought and frequent moisture. As a rule, you need to water it 1-2 times a week. Be guided by weather conditions. In the heat, watering should be increased.
  • It is advisable to mulch the soil near the plant with a layer of peat. This will help the horses retain moisture and also protect the vine from weeds.
  • From the moment of planting to the laying of the buds, feed the crop 3-4 times a month with complex buds. During flowering, fertilize the morning glory with potassium-phosphorus preparations.

If you want to decorate your plot with an attractive climbing plant, then plant an morning glory. This culture is quite unpretentious, and caring for it will not cause any particular difficulties. At the same time, with its decorativeness, it can compete with many capricious vines.
