COVID-19. More children suffer from the disease as adults

The data show that the British variant of the coronavirus is becoming the dominant one in Poland. It is not only more infectious than the original SARS-CoV-2 (by 30-70%), it also has slightly different symptoms. Infection with the mutation from the Islands is less often accompanied by disorders of the sense of smell and taste, and more often there are flu-like symptoms: cough, fatigue, sore throat and muscles, fever, sinus involvement.

These are not the only differences between the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection from a month ago and the current one. – There are more patients, especially young ones, with a severe course of COVID-19 – recently admitted in an interview with Medonet, Dr. Lidia Stopyra, specialist in infectious diseases and paediatrics, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pediatrics of the Specialist Hospital. This is especially noticeable among children. “ While children have rarely had COVID-19 harder in previous months, today we are seeing more young patients suffering from the disease like adults. There are more severe COVID-19 courses, with pneumonia, with severe changes in the lungs, and respiratory failure – the specialist enumerates.

COVID-19 in children. New symptom observed – laryngitis

Doctors observe slightly altered COVID-19 symptoms not only among adults, but also among children. As noted by Gazeta Wyborcza, in the first period of the pandemic, among the symptoms of coronavirus infection in children, doctors indicated diarrhea, less often cough, shortness of breath and temperature. Today, the most common symptom of COVID-19 in young patients is laryngitis. According to estimates given by the daily, «even 80-90 percent of patients who are admitted to a pediatric ward with laryngitis are then confirmed by a test coronavirus infection ».

Let us remind you that the laryngitis in a child manifests itself, among others, by vigorous coughing attacks, may be associated with the coughing of thick mucus, pain behind the breastbone, hoarseness, shortness of breath, impaired voice output or loss of voice.

– Children with severe laryngitis, shortness of breath, pneumonia come to us. Imaging studies show that some children have up to 75% of the virus infected. spit. We must use oxygen therapy, monitor the youngest patients XNUMX hours a day, because large changes in the lungs can cause apnea. More and more children qualify for treatment with remdesivir. The problem, however, is that the drug is missing – said Dr. Stopyra in Gazeta Wyborcza.

A few days ago, Deputy Minister of Health Waldemar Kraska confirmed that more and more children are infected with the coronavirus. He emphasized, however: – We do not see that it was such a large phenomenon and that it would not affect the increased hospitalization only due to coronavirus infection (…) We had a staff at the Ministry of Health just now, we have analyzed this thoroughly and at the moment there is no such great concern – said on March 22 in Republika Television.

Parents were also reassured by prof. Magdalena Marczyńska, specialist in infectious diseases in children. In an interview with PAP, she said: – When family doctors have a patient who has a fever for three days, they send him to the hospital. This is especially true of infants, and certainly children with confirmed COVID. There, it often turns out that the test is positive, but the reason for hospitalization is different. It is often a different infection or disease: otitis, urinary tract infection plus coronavirus infection. This needs to be clearly explained – explained the expert.
