The assumptions that the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic will occur in the fall and winter are slowly starting to prove. In recent days, some European countries have recorded record-high numbers of new daily infections that have not been observed even at the peak of the epidemic. Which countries are the worst?

  1. France in September recorded a record high number of daily SARS-CoV-2 infections. The same fate befell our neighbors, the Czechs, who have not seen such high daily rates of new infections since the beginning of the pandemic.
  2. Ukraine is also struggling with large daily increases, and the local health minister explains that it is because people do not follow the rules regarding wearing masks and keeping distance
  3. How is it in Poland? After the record-breaking August, the beginning of September was going to be calmer, but these were only appearances. The highest daily result for the last 13 days is 691 new infections

France with record numbers of cases

On September 12, French authorities reported 10 new infections with the SARS-CoV-561 coronavirus. This is a record figure, higher than the peak of the outbreak on March 2 (31). France began to record large daily increases in new infections in the second half of August and for now it seems that the number of infections will continue to increase. To date, there have been 7 cases of SARS-CoV-578 coronavirus infection, 381 deaths due to COVID-094 in France. 2 people recovered.

It is worth noting that in the first 13 days of September, 100 new infections appeared in France, which is 069%. total infections in that country since the start of the pandemic.

More and more SARS-CoV-2 infections in Ukraine

Ukraine, Poland’s eastern neighbor, is currently struggling with the growing number of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections. On September 11, there was a record daily increase in new infections – 3144. The previous record was set literally a few days earlier on September 5 and amounted to 2836 cases.

During the TV briefing, Health Minister Maxim Stepanov said that he had no choice but to stick to the rules of the new reality. Over the past three months, the number of new infections in Ukraine has increased significantly due to the easing of certain restrictions, including allowing the reopening of church cafes and the restoration of public transport.

The health minister added that the majority of the society did not follow the doctors’ recommendations, did not wear masks and did not keep their distance.

The epidemic also returned to the Czech Republic

Throughout the first phase of the epidemic, the Czech Republic was doing quite well to contain it. The end of August and the beginning of September were marked by sharp increases in new infections, higher than those of the first phase. On September 12, the record of daily new infections was broken in the Czech Republic – 1541. Overall, 1 cases of new infections were registered in September (September 13-11), which is almost 570 percent. all infections in the Czech Republic recorded since the start of the pandemic (32).

On Sunday, in an interview with tabloid Blesk, Prime Minister Andrej Babis said that the COVID-19 death toll in the Czech Republic is one of the lowest in Europe. He also added that he would appeal to the public to maintain security measures. Epidemiologist Roman Prymula said in a Sunday interview on Czech Television that the second wave of infections has just started, and thus the number of hospitalizations will increase.

Let us remind you that the Czech authorities were one of the first in Europe to order the wearing of masks in public spaces, the closure of schools and shops, and limited travel opportunities. Now, in the face of the second wave, the government has returned to the topic of using masks.

Spain and a half a million infections

On September 8, the barrier of half a million SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections was crossed in Spain. This puts Spain in first place among European countries. In just one week, there were 49 new cases of infections in Spain (more than in the Czech Republic in total) and 716 deaths due to COVID-237.

The second wave began to build up in the second half of July, and the most infections were recorded on August 28 – 9. This is slightly less than during the peak in the first wave. In just 785 days of September, 11 new infections arrived in Spain.

In Poland, more and more times less cases

After the record-breaking August, September seemed to be a bit calmer. Indeed, there are fewer new infections, but still more than at the beginning of the pandemic. In September, the number of infections ranges from 302 (lowest score) to 691 (highest score). While the high numbers of convalescents may be pleasing, it must be borne in mind that in part they are due to the new regulations for exempting people who test positive for COVID-19. Before September, they spent up to a month in isolation. The new regulations made it possible to release these people and thus consider them healthy.

Looking at the charts, a sad reflection arises that we will not be able to control the pandemic for a long time, and we will most likely live with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus for the next decades.
