Chickenpox – Clinics are filling up
Chickenpox is an infectious disease in childhood. It travels very quickly by droplets. We infect before the onset of the rash characteristic of the disease. Currently, more and more cases appear in clinics. Why is this happening? There are two reasons. First of all, at the end of March, the obligation to wear masks, which protected us against various diseases, was abolished. Secondly, the number of vaccinated children still leaves much to be desired.

– We have very few children vaccinated against this disease. Vaccination is actually compulsory and free for a small group of children, e.g. for those who attend nursery schools. For other parents, the cost of each dose is just over PLN 200. There are two doses, so the cost is 500 plus – said Dr. Lidia Stopyra, head of the infectious diseases and paediatrics department of the Hospital. Żeromski in Krakow.

Chickenpox – Why Vaccinate?
Lidia Stopyra encourages you to vaccinate your children. He points out that they not only protect against the dangerous consequences of the disease, but in practice they save nerves, because the disease may simply prevent you from going on a long-awaited vacation. The very first dose protects against this disease. The next one is given at an interval of 2-4 months.
– To make sure we have lifelong immunity, a second dose must be given. But after the first dose, approximately two weeks later, immunity is acquired. It is worth getting vaccinated as soon as possible, because it is the best way to protect yourself from getting sick and avoid problems – advises the pediatrician.
He also points out that we do not live in a vacuum. Our sick child, who will probably recover quickly, may infect someone, for example a person after chemotherapy, for whom such a disease is extremely risky.
– You may be very unlucky and the person at risk will catch the infection. This can lead to real misfortune – added the doctor.
Chickenpox – more and more complications
The pediatrician emphasizes that although most children experience chickenpox relatively mildly, recently there are more complications, such as severe pneumonia, encephalitis or cerebellitis, sepsis as a result of superinfection of skin eruptions. These are conditions that already require treatment in a hospital.
– Despite the fact that the disease is mild in most children, this year we already have several dozen hospitalized children with severe complications – the pediatrician points out.
Chickenpox in numbers
The list of the National Institute of Public Health PZH – PIB shows that in our country, since the beginning of 2022, more than three times more cases of chickenpox have been confirmed than in the previous year. It is over 69 thousand. cases. A year ago, at the same time, there were about 20 of them.
In Poland, about 150-220 thousand. chickenpox cases, most of which are children under 10 years of age. Approximately 1000-1300 patients require hospitalization due to their severe course.
