The Department of Infectious Diseases and Paediatrics at the Żeromski Hospital in Kraków is divided into two parts – one for children with COVID-19, the other for patients with other infections. In the covid part, single beds are currently occupied. The second part is full – there are children, incl. with pocovid complications, but also pneumonia caused by other pathogens, neuroinfections, newborns with congenital infections, children with intestinal catarrh, sepsis; many of them have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which means that they have already passed COVID.
— There are still few children with COVID, but more than a week or two ago. You can see the increases – said Dr. Lidia Stopyra, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pediatrics at the Specialist Hospital. Stefan Żeromski.
She added that recently all cases in the youngest patients of this facility are the Delta variant of the coronavirus. – Children go through the disease more gently, but there are more serious cases requiring hospitalization. The lives of children who are currently hospitalized with us are not in danger – emphasized the doctor.
During the summer holidays, mainly teenagers go to the children’s covid ward. There was no vaccinated child among the patients.
Due to the greater infectivity of the Delta variant, the hospital counts more cases in the fall when children go to school. – We’re ready for it. We already have experience from previous epidemic waves, said Dr Stopyra.
When asked to evaluate the incentives to vaccinate the youngest, she noted that no one can be forced to take the COVID-19 preparation, but it is worth vaccinating children. – The vaccine protects against severe disease and against PIMS, a rare but severe pocovid syndrome. Delta is more contagious and the school year is approaching, the pediatrician said, adding that if the infection occurs in school, unvaccinated children will be quarantined.
As she noted, billions of people in the world have already been vaccinated. – In Poland, vaccinations have been going on for eight months and we can now say with full responsibility that the vaccine is safe – she said and added: – Too bad that there is huge disinformation and fake news on the Internet.
The pediatrician also pointed out that – apart from the pandemic – “it is with children that we have the most experience with vaccinations and we know that they tolerate it well”.
Her observations show that the parents of children who became seriously ill with other infectious diseases regretted delaying vaccination.

According to the Krakow municipality data, the interest in vaccinating children has increased by approx. 10 percent in the last month. compared to the data from the beginning of July. Currently, 47 percent of people are vaccinated in Krakow. people in the group of 12-19 years.
According to Dr. Stopyra, it is a bit late now, because the school year will begin in less than two weeks, and at least five weeks are needed to obtain satisfactory immunity after vaccination. “But you have to get vaccinated as soon as possible,” added the pediatrician.
