A wonderful living carpet of flowers, fragrant with delicate aromas, as if a fabulous forest glade – this is a Moorish lawn in summer. I really want to see such beauty on my site. How to plant a flowering lawn, take care of it, and what difficulties may arise, it is better to know before making a choice in its favor.
Description of the Moorish lawn, pros and cons
The history of the emergence of flower lawns dates back to the XNUMXth century AD. Glades planted with flowers and herbs adorned the surroundings of the castles of the caliphs and emirs during the reign of the Moors in Spain. In the XNUMXst century, such lawns have become popular all over the world. In different countries, they differ in the names of flowers and herbs that make up their composition, but they always look like a beautiful flowering meadow of natural origin.
The advantage of the Moorish lawn is that it is undemanding to the soil, the seeds of unpretentious flowers and grasses are selected. Another plus is that such a lawn does not need to be mowed often, this is done only once a year, in the fall.
The disadvantages include the need to finish sowing annuals after 2 or 3 years of growing the lawn.
Features of planting and care
Before sowing seeds for any lawn, including Mauritanian, the site is carefully prepared. Dig up the earth at least 2 times, removing weeds. Organic fertilizers are introduced – well-rotted manure or compost and river sand, mixing with the top layer of soil.
The plot is well leveled. First with a rake, and then with a special lawn roller. To check for irregularities, sprinkle with water from a hose using the sprinkler method. Where puddles form, fill up the earth to level the surface.
Before planting, the soil is harrowed with a rake, loosening to a depth of 1–2 cm. Seeds are sown at the end of April or May, annual flowers must have time to give seeds so that the lawn resumes self-sowing next year
The seeds are sown to a depth of 1-5 mm, mixing them with sand in a ratio of 1 to 3. Then they are carefully rolled with a lawn roller. The planted lawn is covered with a non-woven fabric to prevent the birds from picking up the seeds. For the successful germination of herbs and flowers, the site is watered daily in the evening, and if it is not covered, then 2 times a day – in the morning and in the evening.
Further care of the lawn is reduced to timely watering. Mow the grass in September or October after the seeds have ripened. This is done in dry weather, leaving the height of the stems 8-10 cm. Then, for several days, the cut grass is not harvested so that the seeds spill out into the soil.
A beautiful flowering lawn has more advantages than disadvantages. To grow it, you need to make a lot of effort, but such a lawn does not require special care. You can find out more about which annual flower seeds are best used for such a lawn by watching the video.
