Monarch grapes: description of the variety, photo
The Monarch grapes were bred in Russia by crossing the Talisman and Cardinal varieties. It is sometimes also called Pavlovsky grapes in honor of its creator. He has delicious and sweet berries.
Description of the grape variety “Monarch”
The bushes are strong and tall, they reach 2,5 m in height. They take root easily, withstand frost well, but are somewhat demanding to care for. The bushes bloom in early June, and begin to bear fruit from August 10-15. The variety is self-pollinated, which further simplifies its cultivation.
Monarch grapes are frost-resistant varieties
The bunches are large, have a cylindrical shape, weigh an average of 500-900 g, but bunches and more than 1 kg are often found. Up to 7 kg of harvest can be harvested from one bush per season. The berries are oval, yellow. The average weight of one berry is 20-25 g. The larger the bunch, the larger the berries on it. The skin is thick enough, but it does not spoil the taste. It is sweet, without acidity and astringency. There is a nutmeg aftertaste. The berries have a pronounced sweet aroma.
Advantages and disadvantages of Monarch grapes
Here are the main benefits of the variety:
- Ripe berries can hang on the bush for a long time and wait until you have time to pick them. This does not affect the taste.
- The bush is not afraid of sudden changes in air or soil humidity. It is not prone to root rot in moist soil.
- Even if the weather is unfavorable for the grapes, peas on the bush are not observed.
- Cuttings take root perfectly, regardless of which growing method you choose: planting on their own roots or grafting.
- The grapes easily endure the winter. Its frost resistance is -23−25 ° С.
- The variety is resistant to diseases such as gray mold and mildew.
The main disadvantage of the variety is that the ovary sometimes falls off the bush. However, this can be avoided. To prevent the ovary from crumbling, do not thin out the clusters that have begun to form and do not remove the shoots before flowering. If you need to adjust the number of bunches, cut them off after the berries are about the size of a pea.
Another drawback: “Monarch” is often sick with powdery mildew. This disease can lead to loss of the crop and the entire bush. Therefore, as a preventive measure, always treat the plant with chemicals against this disease.
