Momecutan ointment is a preparation from the group of gilocorticosteorides available on prescription. This ointment is used in cases of skin inflammation, such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. The active substance of Momecutan ointment is mometasone, a synthetic and fluoridated glucocorticosteroid. How to use Momecutan ointment correctly and can its use cause side effects?
Momecutan – composition and operation
Momecutan is a steroid ointment that is used to reduce the symptoms of skin inflammation. The main ingredient in Momecutan ointment is mometasone, a synthetic glucocorticosteroid recommended for topical use. The active substance of the drug is anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and immunosuppressive. This drug also exhibits vasoconstrictive properties, so that it is not absorbed into the blood during use. Mometasone is an ingredient that is often the active ingredient of many steroid ointments. In addition to Momecutan, it is part of such medical preparations as Edelan, Elitasone, Elocom, Ivoxel or Ovixan.
Momecutan – indications and contraindications
The indication for the use of Momecutan ointment is the treatment of various skin diseases that respond to the action of corticosteroids. Usually, Momecutan ointment is prescribed to patients who struggle with hives, eczema, dermatoses, contact or atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, impetigo, and allergic reactions to insect bites. It is worth mentioning that Momecutan is also available in the form of nasal drops. This type of preparation is indicated in the treatment of symptoms of perennial or seasonal allergic rhinitis. Momecutan, despite its wide application and effectiveness, cannot be used in all patients who are struggling with skin diseases. A contraindication to the use of Momecutan ointment is hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the preparation or to corticosteroids in general. The ointment should not be used in the case of rosacea and common acne, atrophic skin lesions, in bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal infections, and in tuberculosis, syphilis or post-vaccination reactions. This drug is also not indicated for the treatment of children under 6 years of age. Momecutan ointment should not be applied to the eyelids and eyes.
Momecutan – dosage method
The correct use and appropriate dose of Momecutan ointment is determined by the doctor. As recommended in the package leaflet, Momecutan ointment should be used once a day. A thin layer of the ointment should be applied to the affected area. In the case of Momecutan ointment, the so-called tandem therapy, which consists in applying this ointment once a day, and then, after 12 hours, an appropriate agent is applied without the active substance.
Momecutan – possible side effects
The use of Momecutan ointment, as in the case of other corticosteroids, may cause side effects. A common side effect is a stinging or tingling sensation at the application site. In addition, there may be skin infections, boils, folliculitis, itching, hirsutism or, in the case of frequent and long use, skin atrophy.
