Hypertension does not hurt, so it can kill quietly. In Poland, every third person suffers from this ailment, and the number of patients is constantly increasing. We owe ourselves. We eat fatty foods, we go overboard with salt and most of all we lack fruit and vegetables. In many – but not all – cases the solution to the problem lies on the plate. The family doctor, Dr. Michał Domaszewski, has proof of this.

Hypertension – what is this disease?
More and more Poles struggle with arterial hypertension. There is evidence of it. Exactly this trend can be seen in the largest health survey on the Polish Internet (the National Health Test of Poles), which Medonet has been conducting since 2020. Almost every third adult Pole (29%) suffers from hypertension. This is an increase of 4 percentage points. compared to the previous year’s survey. Why is there ever more sick people? The answer is simple. We do not slow down the pace of life, we smoke a lot and abuse alcohol, we get obese, and our diet is based mainly on processed products, which contain a lot of salt. It is she who contributes to the increase in blood pressure – the blood presses more forcefully against the walls of blood vessels.
How do you know if you have high blood pressure?
It is a disease that we are not aware of at first, because it does not cause any symptoms or they are small. However, over time, dizziness and headaches, insomnia, sweating, palpitations, decline in physical and mental condition, hot flushes and flushing may occur. It is enough to test the blood pressure, which we can do ourselves at home on a specific day, once every six months. Double or triple measurement should give us clarity if there is any reason to be concerned. Two parameters indicate the correct blood pressure: systolic pressure in the range of 120-129, and diastolic pressure in the range of 80-84.

Any deviation from the norm requires a visit to the doctor. Hypertension is actually dangerous because it can lead to atherosclerosis, and its progression to life-threatening complications, i.e. stroke and heart attack. Is there any medicine for this disease? The most important thing is your diet. Nothing revealing. Limiting stimulants and salt, introducing as many foods rich in potassium and magnesium as possible, because they regulate blood pressure.

What’s on the plate of a person with a DASH diet?
The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is a diet recognized as essential by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the prevention and treatment of heart disease. The most important thing in it is, first of all, the radical elimination of salt. Every day, we should normally consume no more than a flat teaspoon of salt (approx. 5 g). DASH looks at this norm even more restrictively, lowering it to 2,3 g, and in the case of hypertension (also known as hypertension) even to 1,5 g.
