Among all rum-based cocktails, the Mojito is the most popular. It is easy to make, you just need to know the composition, proportions and which rum to choose. In many ways, the taste of a cocktail depends on the rum.
According to the classic recipe, Mojito is prepared on the basis of light varieties of rum, but dark types have also begun to be actively used recently. Connoisseurs say that this does not affect the taste of the finished cocktail in any way and only benefits bar owners.
The fact is that aged dark varieties, which are usually drunk in their pure form, are more expensive than light ones. In Europe, whiskey and cognac compete with rum for the interest of lovers of aged strong alcohol, as a result of which the demand for dark rum has decreased, so they began to make Mojito based on it.
The use of dark (golden) rum increases the cost of the cocktail, but does not affect its taste in any way.
Among the brands most commonly used are “Habana Club” and “Ron Varadero”. It is believed that Bacardi rum, which is popular with us, is not the best choice for Mojito, but many bartenders do not agree with this statement and prepare a cocktail based on Bacardi. For a simple layman, the brand is of no fundamental importance, because the taste of rum is lost when mixed with soda, lime and sugar.
How to replace rum in Mojito
Almost all ingredients are replaceable. Everything is very simple: you can take vodka as an alcohol base. Fresh mint is also not always available, the original solution is to add mint syrup to the cocktail, which eliminates the need to pour sugar.
