More and more countries decide to abolish covid restrictions. According to the government, it is high time to turn the coronavirus on the agenda and learn to live with it, without major restrictions. However, there are voices warning against disregarding SARS-CoV-2. Among them is Dan Staner, vice president of Moderna, who believes that the time after the holidays will be crucial. Then it remains to be seen whether we can talk about the end of the pandemic, or whether the coronavirus will surprise us again with something.
- Staner, in an interview published in Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, said that we should be vigilant, because a new variant of the coronavirus may appear
- Moderna’s vice president pointed out that he does not have to be softer than the Omicron. SARS-CoV-2 is so unpredictable that the new variant could be as infectious as the current dominant coronavirus strain and at the same time as virulent as Delta, for example
- Asked about the COVID-19 vaccine for young children, he said the European Medicines Agency will evaluate it in the coming weeks

A new variant more dangerous than the previous ones?
In an interview with Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, Staner stated that the emergence of a new coronavirus variant cannot be ruled outthat will make the pandemic prolonged. It is also disturbing that there are people who have contracted practically every variant that causes waves of infections – Alpha, Delta and Omikron. This means that we are not immune to infection from SARS-CoV-2, even though we have antibodies.

“This is why we must remain vigilant so that the virus does not surprise us again and strike us again. The key moment will be the time after the holidays – by the end of August we must be ready for a scenario in which people will have to be protected against a potential new variant again, ”said the deputy head of Moderna, one of the producer of vaccines against COVID-19.
As he added, one must bear in mind the fact that the next variant does not have to be milder than the previous ones. It can be as infectious as Omikron and at the same time cause severe infectionsand, leading to hospitalization or even death.

What about the vaccine for the youngest children?
Dan Staner also said at what stage are the research on the effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine in the youngest age group: two-, three- and four-year-olds.
«The study with this age group did not start until November; We expect the first results in March. For older children, aged six to 12, initial results with the reduced dose were encouraging. The vaccine was well tolerated and elicited an immune response in the form of antibodies. A preparation for this age group should be approved within a week or two. We expect feedback from the Risk Assessment Committee of the European Medicines Agency in the coming weeks ».

Moderna’s deputy chief also referred to allegations that the company – like other COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers – is not entirely transparent about the side effects that their preparation may cause.

«Moderny’s preparation reached 250 million people last year alone. Based on this, we can conclude that it is effective and provides protection. Most importantly – before the Delta variant, i.e. the one that most often sent people to intensive care units and caused the most deaths. What’s more, regulatory authorities around the world monitor the safety of our product on an ongoing basis. Of course, it may be followed by a fever or chills, but these are not serious side effects. The most important thing is the protection our product provides », he assured.
Staner also revealed that Moderna is working on a combined vaccine against coronavirus and flu. The multivalent vaccine should hit the market in the second half of next year.
