Mistakes when using sunscreen

To reliably protect your skin from the sun, you will have to not only apply a cream with SPF, but do it on time and correctly. Not everyone copes with this. We find out what is often done wrong, and we work on the mistakes.

Four mistakes

1. Chose a product with too low SPF

For many, the prospect of returning from vacation not tanned enough is stronger than the fear of getting burned. Therefore, people often choose products with a low SPF level that does not match either the skin phototype or the strength of UV radiation. In fact, well-protected skin tans better: gradualness provides not only a beautiful, but also a lasting tan.

Conclusion: choose a product with SPF 30-50.

2. Apply too little

Inadequate protection is fraught with sad consequences in the form of burns, age spots, wrinkles, not to mention an increased risk of developing neoplasms. The required amount of the product is 2 mg per square centimeter of skin. This is quite a lot, so they usually apply half, or even three times less.

Do not be greedy, apply sunscreen generously, evenly, without missing a single millimeter of skin, including areas hidden by a swimsuit.

In the first days of the holiday, use a sunscreen with a maximum SPF.

3. Apply too late

Using sunscreen right on the beach, you run the risk of getting burned in the very first days of your vacation. According to the rules, sunscreen should be applied 20-30 minutes before going outside.

Spread the product evenly over the skin and allow it to absorb, if necessary, apply another layer.

4. Forgot to update protection in time

When in the sun, reapply every 2 hours. This frequency is due to a whole range of reasons:

  • the protective layer begins to wear off already on the way to the beach as a result of friction against clothes, and then washed off under the influence of sweat, which is more intense in the heat, and water when swimming;

  • physical filters, designed to reflect the sun’s rays from the surface of the skin, are erased under the influence of sand and towels;

  • and finally, we initially apply an insufficient amount of product (see above).

Reapply your SPF frequently when you’re at the beach and after every swim, even if it’s waterproof.
