Coronavirus in Poland. Data as of August 5, 2022.

The Ministry of Health (MZ) informed about 4295 new infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. For 719 people, this is another COVID-19 (reinfection). 17 patients died. 11 thousand. 815 coronavirus tests.

Most infections come from the following voivodeships: Mazowieckie, Śląskie and Małopolskie. The statistics for these regions can be found below, and you can check the number of infections in other provinces HERE.

On Wednesday, the health ministry released a weekly report on infections and deaths from COVID-19. It shows that in the period from July 28 to August 3, 19 were entered into the official COVID-21 register. 973 people, while 73 patients died. This is a jump compared to the previous period, when there were 19 new infections (per week). 577 and deaths 49.

There is also more hospitalization. A week ago, the health ministry informed about 1884 occupied covid beds (as of July 26), on August 2, there were already 2389 of them. For comparison, in June about 300-400 people were hospitalized (weekly data).

Another wave in fall, but later than usual

Recently Health Minister Adam Niedzielski spokethat the peak of the summer wave of infections should be expected in mid-August. Later, he reassured that the real number of infections was lower than forecasted by health ministry experts. At yesterday’s press conference, he said in turn that we are at the peak of the tide and although the number of hospitalizations has indeed increased, the statistics of the cases themselves are more optimistic.

The head of the Ministry of Health also referred to the question about the next wave of infections, saying that it will probably be slightly delayed this year. The cause is precisely summer infections, which did not take place on such a scale that year.

«It is assumed that the period of about 20 weeks is the period when we gain such short-term immunity that puts off the fall wave that we always talked about in the context of the turn of September and October. Now the most likely scenario is that if we deal with another wave, it will rather be postponed to November, December.»- emphasized Niedzielski.

Will universal testing come back?

One problem that experts are addressing is the limited testing for COVID-19, which has resulted in under-infection. Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski in a recent interview with WP.pl said that “if we limit testing, the data that is presented is completely unreliable”.

“We took 50-60 thousand of these tests a year ago, and now – I am talking about the daily collection of tests – we do 5-6 thousand of them, which is 10 times less tests per day. I am talking, of course, about the research that is recorded in the system. At least two to three times as many tests are performed by patients at their own expense, buying tests in pharmacies, but the results of these tests are not included in the system. Therefore, these data, which are to serve some government policy, are completely distorted, they are unreliable and quoting them, in my opinion, is simply embarrassing “- said the doctor in the” Newsroom “program.

The expert added that in Poland there may be up to 20 times more infections than the official data of the Ministry of Health show. It would mean that with the current 5-6 thousand infections per day, the real number of COVID-19 cases would be around 100.

However, as the minister of health says, the testing scale will not be significantly increased, and widespread testing will not come back anytime soon.

“As this phase of the epidemic does not put so much pressure on the hospital system in the first place, this testing must target symptomatic people. There is no complete need to introduce a common testing system, because at the moment the impact of this virus, in terms of the severity of the course, but our immunity is definitely different »- he noted.
