Pomeranian.

Coronavirus in Poland. One case of the Lambda variant

There are already more than 10 official variants of SARS-CoV-2 on the list of the World Health Organization. They differ from each other by mutations in the spike proteins – the components of the virus that allow it to invade human cells. There are four “worrying variants”: Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta, and four “variants of concern” – Eta, Jota, Kappa and Lambda.

«We had four cases (of the Lambda-PAP variant), but due to a change in the description of the Lambda mutation case in the international GISAID registry (the database that collects global data on the coronavirus genome), three cases have been assigned to other mutations. This is the decision of the keepers of the GISAID register »- informed the spokesman of the Ministry of Health.

“So we have one case so far and it is not an active case,” he said. Andrusiewicz said that it concerns the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

  1. Third dose of vaccine – who will need it? What do the specialists say?

Saturday’s statements say that since March 4 last year, when the first SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected in Poland, a total of 2 million 883 thousand has been confirmed so far. 976 cases. 75 thousand died 285 people with COVID-19.

Lambda variant – what do we know about it?

The Lambda variant was first detected in Peru in December last year, hence it was referred to as the Peruvian variant (referred to as C.37) for some time. Initially, Lambda was mainly observed in South American countries, now it has been noticed in 41 countries, and in June it reached Australia.

In mid-June, the World Health Organization recognized the Lambda variant as the so-called Variants of Interest (VOI). Apart from Lambda, this list also includes three others (a few weeks ago there were six), incl. Eta, Iota (New York) or Kappa (Indian). This means that these variants have mutations that affect, inter alia, the ease of transmission of the pathogen, the severity of the disease, the ability to avoid vaccines, or misleading diagnostic tests.

“The virus from these provinces will flood the entire country”. Where is the greatest increase in infections in Poland?

Among the Lambda variant mutations, the L452Q mutation was identified, which is similar to the L452R mutation observed in the Delta and Epsilon variants. L452R makes Delta and Epsilon more resistant to vaccination, therefore there is a suspicion that Lambda with the L452Q mutation may have the same characteristics. Other mutations found in this strain are RSYLTPGD246-253N, F490S and T76I.

However, the first few studies of the Lambda variant showed that mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderny) retain protection against the Lambda variant.
