Mildronate or meldonium: indications for use

Probably these heart pills have never been mentioned as often as in the last week. Although they have existed since 1984.

A neurologist prescribed Mildronate (aka meldonium) drug for me after I fainted right on the street due to hypoxia. It turned out that after a neck injury, I had interruptions in the supply of oxygen to the brain. And the neurologist prescribed Mildronat for me to normalize blood circulation. I remember that I felt much better, I had less headache, but I could not chop nuts with my hands. Alas, no superpowers manifested themselves. Even the texts were not typed faster. Therefore, when I heard that these pills were recorded in doping for Maria Sharapova, I was very surprised.

Masha’s confession was not easy

If (suddenly!) You are in an information vacuum for two days, then we recall: Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova admitted that she had been taking Mildronat for 10 years, which the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has included in the lists of prohibited in sports since January 1, 2016.

That traces of the drug were found in her blood, Sharapova announced at a press conference. According to Masha, the pills were prescribed by the doctor, because the tests of the athlete showed a lack of magnesium and signs of diabetes. The sample was taken in January during a performance at the Australian Open. All those involved in the association immediately announced that Masha had been warned about five times that more Mildronat could not be taken, but she did not listen.

“I made a mistake. I do not want my career to end this way, and I hope that I will still have a chance to play, ”the athlete added.

Now the eminent tennis player is awaiting trial. Sharapova faces a four-year ban on participation in competitions. Having learned about the scandal, large companies such as Nike, the watch brand TAG Heuer and Porsche hastened to suspend advertising contracts with Maria. According to rough estimates, Masha could lose up to $ 140 million. But even that is not scary. The question will be decided whether all the medals of our tennis player have been justly won!

Phew! So much noise and tragedy because of the pills that are prescribed to almost everyone who has problems with blood supply and high loads!

“There is a class of drugs called cardiometabolic, they are aimed at improving the degree of oxygenation, that is, the saturation of cells with oxygen,” explained Denis Prokofiev, a physician, a member of the Russian Society of Cardiology, to Woman’s Day. “Mildronat is one of them. The heart is a muscle, it feeds on oxygen, the task of the drug is to restore balance between the need for and delivery of oxygen to the cells. Such drugs are prescribed for people with chronic heart failure, for those who have suffered a stroke and need to normalize cerebral circulation. Mildronate is widely used in medicine during recovery periods and more often in elderly people. To say that this is doping can only be a stretch. If we drink it, we will not become Olympic champions, it will simply allow us to better endure increased physical activity, and not turn into terminators. “

Surprised by the role attributed to “Mildronat” (meldonia) and its creator – the Latvian professor Ivars Kalvins. According to him, which is transmitted by the French edition Le MondeThere is no scientific evidence that the drug can improve the performance of athletes.

“It is a protective drug that does not lead to a surge in energy or physical ability. Conversely, meldonium lowers the rate of carnitine, a supplement used by bodybuilders to slow the production of energy in the body. Athletes train to the limit of their abilities. They need Mildronate to prevent heart attacks or muscle damage in case of overtraining. Athletes taking the drug should not expect higher performance, but they will be protected from cell damage. This will not allow them to win, but it will keep them healthy! “

Let us emphasize that Mildronat will not cause any harm to the health of mere mortals, that is, you and me – it is absolutely safe. We are talking exclusively about side effects such as stimulation of endurance and strength, which are considered doping in big sports.
