Omicron produces similar symptoms to a cold

“If we suspect a coronavirus infection, we should check it as soon as possible” – microbiologist Dr. Joanna Jursa-Kulesza told PAP. She noted that knowledge about the infection allows for a more detailed observation and faster detection of disturbing symptoms.

«The situation in the hospital is currently very stable. It can be said that there is a bit more traffic in the Hospital Emergency Department, in the infectious emergency room, but we qualify single patients for hospital care » – said in an interview with PAP a microbiologist, head of the infection control team at the provincial hospital in Szczecin, Dr. Joanna Jursa-Kulesza, MD, Ph.D.

She added that doctors observe mass infections mainly in the form of colds, “which do not qualify for hospital treatment or for major diagnostic and therapeutic procedures”.

There will be more hospitalizations

«However, since last week we have seen a surge in infections in Poland and we expect that next week we may have a very difficult situation in the hospital. The Omikron variant is slowly starting to dominate in causing infections, and the statistics are inexorable – the more people get sick, the more hospitalization will also require » The doctor explained.

She pointed out that the symptoms of patients infected with coronavirus are mainly related to the upper respiratory tract: acute sore throat associated with a dry cough, runny nose with sinus pain and headaches. She added that abdominal pain and diarrhea also occur, but are less common than with earlier variants of the virus.

«When we know we are infected with the coronavirus, the first thing we do is take our temperature. If a high fever persists – above 39 degrees Celsius – contact your doctor. Likewise, when breathing problems begin »said the doctor.

She emphasized that these problems appear after the saturation drops, which is why – as she pointed out – it is worth getting a pulse oximeter and checking blood oxygenation, and not to be confused by the milder course of the disease.

«The patient may not feel that the saturation drops below 93-92%. This is a very unfavorable phenomenon, because when he begins to experience shortness of breath, the lungs are already largely affected by the disease »- said Dr. Jursa-Kulesza.

You have to test yourself, also on your own

She added that this is also why it is not worth avoiding the coronavirus test – you can first perform an antigen test available in pharmacies or stores.

«If we suspect an infection, we should check it as soon as possible. The more so because with such a number of cases, you have to wait longer for the result of the PCR test »- pointed out the microbiologist.

She stipulated that rapid cassette tests gave a positive result in the period of the patient’s infectivity, therefore if symptoms are present and the cassette test is negative, the test should be performed with the PCR test, which is more sensitive.

“We can order the PCR test ourselves via the patient.gov.pl platform” – recalled Dr. Jursa-Kulesza. (PAP)
