Miconal – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Miconal is used in the treatment of fungal infections of the feet, tinea pedis, tinea pedis, onychomycosis, cutaneous yeast infection and tinea versicolor. The preparation is intended only for external use on the skin. The drug is in the form of a gel and is available over the counter in pharmacies.

ACTION

Miconal is an antifungal and antibacterial drug, an imidazole derivative.

Miconal – indications and dosage

Miconal is recommended:

  1. in fungal infection of the feet,
  2. in mycosis,
  3. in mycosis of the torso,
  4. in onychomycosis,
  5. in foot yeast infection.

Dosing Miconal

The duration of treatment in the case of candidiasis of the skin, tinea pedis, legs and tinea versicolor is usually 2 weeks. The duration of treatment of tinea pedis is 4-6 weeks.

  1. Adults: a 1 mm thick layer of gel should be applied to the affected skin area twice a day. In onychomycosis, the gel is used under closed dressings.
  2. Tinea versicolor: adults topical 1 × / day.

Miconal and contraindications

A contraindication to the use of Miconal is allergy to any of its ingredients.

Miconal – warnings

  1. Miconal is intended for external skin application only. Do not use on damaged skin, mucous membranes and around the eyes, and avoid contact with the eyes.
  2. The safety of the gel in children has not been established.
  3. Discontinue use of the gel in the event of drug hypersensitivity or local irritation.
  4. It is not recommended for pregnant women due to the lack of data on the safety of its use. During this period, the preparation can only be used when, in the doctor’s opinion, the benefit for the mother outweighs the potential risk for the fetus.
  5. Use of Miconal during breastfeeding only after prior consultation with a doctor and with special caution.
  6. There are no data on the effect of the drug on the ability to drive and use machines.

Miconal – interactions

Interactions with other medications are very rare after topical application of Miconal.

Caution should be exercised and prothrombin time monitored in patients taking oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin). Miconazole may increase and prolong the duration of action of phenytoin. If oral antidiabetic drugs, sulfonylurea derivatives (chlorpropamide, gibenclamide, glipizide, tolbutamide) are used in parallel, miconazole may increase and prolong the duration of these drugs, which may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia.

Miconal – side effects

During treatment with Miconal, the following may occur:

  1. irritation,
  2. baking,
  3. itchy skin at the application site
  4. allergic contact dermatitis.
