Micellar water to remove makeup
For ten years now, micellar waters have been on the rise. Praised in particular by models and other stars, they would be very effective for removing makeup. Many dermatologists also recommend them. But what exactly is micellar water? Is it suitable for all skin types?
What is micellar water used for?
The composition of micellar water
When the term “micellar water” began to gain traction in cosmetic departments, many questions arose. What did she have more than traditional water, such as floral water for example? And above all, what are these micelles that give it its name?
From a purely chemical point of view, a micelle is a globule which groups together several hundred surfactant molecules. In cleansing water of this type, the micelles behave in two ways. Some of it dissolves in water. While the other acts like oil.
The effect of micellar water for makeup removal
The dual characteristic of micelles thus leads them to attach all the particles encrusted on the superficial layers of the skin. So that makeup of course, but also all the impurities, as well as the excess sebum, do not resist its passage.
Make-up removal is done simply by pouring micellar water on a cotton pad. Several passes are necessary, especially if you wear a lot of makeup. Make-up removal is complete when the last cotton comes back without impurities.
Micellar water, for what types of skin?
Micellar water is regularly indicated for all skin types. But beware, it can be irritating. Because there is micellar water and micellar water. They are not all created equal, far from it. A famous consumer association has also made a few tests and noted the best.
The most famous brands, however, have developed ranges with a different product for each skin profile. They differ in their composition.
Oily skin with acne: is micellar water recommended?
Thus, a micellar water for oily skin will contain, for example, zinc and copper for their purifying effects.
However, oily and acne-prone skin should not be stripped, at the risk of causing a counterproductive effect. In such a case, a specific and good quality micellar water may have an interest in regulating the sebum from the make-up removal phase. But on condition that you then use gentle care and, again, adapted to the situation.
In case of acne after 30 years, it is better to consult a dermatologist directly. He will be best able to determine the causes and will advise you on the correct method of removing make-up.
Sensitive and irritated skin
Micellar water, despite its composition supposed to mimic that of the skin, can be irritating. After application, you may indeed feel some tingling and tightness. Moisturizers can immediately stop them in normal skin, but sensitive skin can suffer.
The irritation arises directly from the composition of the micellar water. Micelles are therefore surfactants as such. In other words, they are of the same nature as detergents. So if they are effective at cleaning, they can go as far as stripping. Especially if the mechanical movement of the cotton is too intense.
In general, avoid micellar water that contains alcohol.
Micellar water, a bad idea?
The opinion of dermatologists
Like many cosmetic products loved by some, hated by others, micellar water has its detractors. The opinions of dermatologists diverge. It may sound amazing, but there is no firm and definitive scientific truth about daily skin cleansing. Dermatologists advise according to the type of skin and the possible pathologies of each of their patients.
However, many do not see any concern with the use of micellar waters. But on condition that you use a quality product suitable for your skin type.
Cleansing milk, the alternative
Micellar water is ultimately nothing miraculous compared to other makeup removal methods. However, if you cannot stand removing make-up with water with a foaming product, there is in particular another solution: cleansing milk.
Rather than using it with a cotton pad, prefer massaging the face in small circular movements. Then wipe with cotton or a tissue.
There are also cleansing oils that turn into milk under the effect of massage.
However, cleansing milk can have an annoying tendency to leave a greasy film on the skin. Used on the eyes in particular, the effect is often unpleasant. In this case, apply a tonic or floral water to remove it gently.
