Psychic trauma — local damage to the psyche from the blows of life.

Manifestations: confused thinking, gaps in memory, attention floats, speech with oddities, adequacy, orientation in the situation and adaptation to what is happening are disturbed, often long and persistent fears arise. Unlike conventional psychiatry, these manifestations occur immediately after a traumatic event (experiencing a catastrophe, unexpected loss of loved ones or other important life values).

The destructive power of mental trauma depends on the individual significance of the traumatic event for a person, the degree of his psychological security (fortitude) and resistance to the blows of fate.

Important: mental and psychological trauma are not the same thing. Psychic trauma is damage (by someone or something) to the psyche, leading to a noticeable disruption of its normal functioning. In case of psychological trauma, there are no disturbances in the functions of the psyche, a person still has the opportunity to be adequate and successfully adapt to the environment.

It is possible to talk about whether there is a mental trauma or not only if there are criteria. So far, such criteria are unknown or too vague. A physical injury is recognized as an injury when there is local damage to the body, leading to a noticeable disruption in the normal functioning of the body or its parts. Most often this is due to temporary or permanent limitation or disability.

Similarly, psychic trauma is local damage (by someone or something) to the psyche, leading to a noticeable disruption of its normal functioning. Most often this is due to a temporary or permanent limitation or disability, although, due to our cultural traditions, it is rare for anyone to turn to a specialist in this regard.

Do physical punishments lead to mental trauma?

No, they don’t. By themselves, hitting during physical punishment is not the cause of any mental trauma. Physical punishment can cause psychological trauma due to moral blows, due to blows to sore points in the child’s soul. See Physical punishment and mental injury.

What to do in case of mental trauma?

  • If we are talking about the emergence of fears, then see Dealing with fear
  • If attention floats, speech is odd, sometimes EMDP helps
