The latest report of the National Institute of Public Health includes information on mortality in Poland. It shows that the most common cause of death for men in our country are cardiovascular diseases.

More boys are born in Poland, but the statistics change over the years and there are more women in the older age groups (47+). Among Poles 65+, there are 100 women per 154 men. Among the 85+ seniors, this advantage is even greater – 260 ladies out of 100 men. It is related to the differences in life expectancy – in men it is 74,1 years and in women 81,8 years.

There is also a difference between Poles and Polish women between the years lived in good health, without reduced fitness. For women in Poland, the average is 64,3 years, and for men it is 60,5 years. This is the largest discrepancy in the entire European Union. Poles’ life expectancy is clearly shorter than the EU average. According to Eurostat data, in 2018 the difference was 4,6 years (in the case of Polish women it was only 1,9 years). The NIPH-PZH report shows that no improvement in this matter has been observed in the last three years.

Diseases from which Poles die most often

The latest report by the National Institute of Public Health, which analyzes data from 2018, shows that the most common cause of death in men in Poland is cardiovascular disease. They constitute 35,9 percent. all deaths among Poles. Malignant neoplasms are in second place (25,9%). The third most common cause of death in Polish men are disease symptoms, i.e. causes that have not been characterized as a specific disease. Such deaths account for 10,5 percent. all death.

The above data applies to all men in Poland, regardless of age. After taking into account individual age groups, it turns out that the main causes of death among men change. Men under the age of 44 die primarily due to external causes. Over the years, the incidence of malignant neoplasms and heart disease has been increasing.

Heart diseases and malignant neoplasms in men in Poland

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, heart failure, coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis, are the main cause of death for men in the 45-49 age group (22,3%). The situation is similar in the range of 50 – 54 (24,6%). Between the ages of 55 and 59, more Poles die of malignant neoplasms (27,4%). Cancer also kills seniors aged 60-64 (32%) and 65-69 (34,5%) more often. In the following years, cardiovascular diseases become the most dangerous again, accounting for 85% of men aged 50,7+. among all diagnosed causes of death.

In the case of malignant neoplasms of Polish men, prostate cancer is the most deadly (19,7%). Poles are also at risk of lung cancer (16,8%) and colorectal cancer (12,3%).

Diseases of the digestive system and disease symptoms – they threaten especially middle-aged Poles

Younger Poles also die of heart disease and malignant neoplasms, but they are much more likely to suffer from diseases of the digestive system. This cause of death accounts for 7,9 percent. among men aged 25 – 29. The death rate from diseases of the digestive system in the 30-34 group is 10,3%. and reaches its peak in the group of 40-44 (12,7%).

Among the most common causes of death in adult Poles under the age of 69, the category that raises particular concerns is “disease symptoms”. It includes all deaths in which a specific disease was not identified. Disease symptoms kill 11,6 percent. Poles in the 25-25 age group, 15,6 percent in the range of 30 – 34 and 18 percent. men between 35 and 39 years of age. Until the age of 64, this category remains above 10%, and in the 85+ group it reaches 12,6%. and become the third cause of death among seniors after heart disease and malignant neoplasms.

Poles in their youth and middle age also die of external causes

Between the ages of 10 and 44, Polish men die mainly from external factors. In recent years, the most common causes of death in this category have been falls, suicides, and traffic accidents.

Such a cause of death accounts for 42,8 percent. of all deaths in the group of 10 – 14 years and 65,7 percent. between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest percentage of deaths due to external causes is recorded in the group of 20-24 years (70,3%). Between 25 and 29 years old. this category accounts for 57,4 percent. of all deaths, in the group of 30-34 years it is 44,3%. Only in the group 45-49 do external factors (19,1%) precede heart disease (22,3%). In the following years of life, the share of this category has been systematically decreasing.
