Memotropil (piracetam) is a cognitive drug prescribed to patients after a stroke, used as an adjunct to dyslexia in children – it is prescribed for children over 9 years of age and weighing more than 30 kg. Also used to treat cortical myoclonus, which are sudden, jerky contractions within larger groups of muscles. It is issued only with a prescription and it is the doctor who determines the specific dose based on the diagnosed case.
Memotropil – indications for use
Memotropil it is used mainly in diseases that impede cognitive functions, sometimes in alcoholism, or as an aid to improve memory or concentration. Usually it is prescribed for:
- cognitive dysfunction (except Alzheimer’s and other dementias),
- the consequences of cerebral ischemia,
- supportive in dyslexia in children (over 9 years of age),
- symptomatically in the treatment of dizziness,
- in myoclonus of cortical origin,
- in people who abuse alcohol,
- supportive in improving memory and concentration.
The dosage of this drug depends on the type of disease and the individual needs of the patient. The doctor decides about the dose. Sometimes it is necessary to reduce the doses of anticonvulsants. It comes in the form of 1200 or 800 mg film-coated tablets.
Memotropil – possible side effects and precautions
As with any drug, so is treatment Memotropylem side effects of taking the tablets may occur. These can be: diarrhea, vomiting, insomnia, depression, anxiety, aggression, sleep disturbances, over-agitation. Fluctuations in blood pressure, dizziness, allergic reactions and somnolence have been rarely observed. Occasionally there is: weight gain (with long-term treatment), libido increased, and the seizure threshold decreased in people treated with anticonvulsants. Possible side effects in children are: being overactive, hyperactive, anxious, depressed, sleepy or unable to sleep.
While taking the drug Memotropil it is advisable to exercise caution in the following cases:
- when driving and operating machinery, as Memotropil affects psychophysical fitness,
- in case of hypersensitivity to piracetam,
- in diseases of the liver and kidneys,
- in case of hypotension,
- while taking drugs that act on the nervous system, neuroleptics, e.g. Haloperidol, Thioridazin,
- if you are taking medications that act on thyroid hormones,
- if pregnancy is suspected, during pregnancy and lactation.
Memotropil – reviews
Reviews about the drug Memotropil are generally rather positive. Especially for people who have had problems with memory and concentration. According to the recipients of the drug, it helps in the states of distraction and discouragement. Patients, on the other hand, complain about the feeling of drowsiness, which usually accompanies them in the first period of taking the drug, or on the contrary – excessive liveliness. There were opinions about recurrence of depressive states.
