Music affects the functioning of the cardiovascular system (who would doubt it!). This was confirmed by Michael Miller, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland (USA). For several weeks, volunteers listened to their favorite compositions, as well as melodies that annoyed them or, conversely, calmed them *. Before and after the session, doctors measured the throughput (diameter) of the brachial artery in each with ultrasound. It turned out that it increased by an average of 26% (compared to the usual state) when the participants in the experiment enjoyed their favorite music; by 11% when listening to relaxing melodies. But the music that irritated them (heavy metal in the case of the experiment) reduced the capacity of the vessel by 6%, making it difficult for blood flow. According to Dr. Miller, listening to our favorite tunes every day, we are imperceptibly engaged in the prevention of heart disease. And at no extra cost! S.S.

* The results of the study were presented at the scientific session of the American Heart Association in New Orleans in November 2008.
