Melanoma is the most malignant skin cancer. It can arise from melanocytic nevi, pre-melanoma or previously unchanged skin.
The initial stage of melanoma is the so-called malignant lentil stain occurring in the temporal or zygomatic area, a slowly growing spot of varying intensity of brown color. The melanoma itself may be a flat infiltration, nodule or ulceration of all or part of the brown or black color (although there are also melanomas without pigment). Subungual melanomas usually appearing on the big toe require differentiation from hematoma and removal of the nail plate in order to obtain a specimen.
Melanoma treatment is primarily surgical, sometimes with removal of the surrounding lymph nodes, and other methods are used less frequently.
