Mefacit is a pain reliever that also has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and soothing effects on the musculoskeletal system. Mainly used in rheumatology and orthopedics. It is a good response to neuralgia, muscle ailments, toothache, headache, root pain and intense menstruation. Mefacit therapy is short-term, the drug is used when there is a need for immediate reduction of problematic symptoms.
Mefacit – dosage and form of the drug
Acidum mefenamicum comes in two forms, i.e. tablets for oral use and rectal suppositories. The tablets should be swallowed whole with meals and washed down with plenty of water. Suppositories are used carefully rectally if needed for faster action. Typically, dosing is started with an initial 500mg base dose given every six hours to reduce pain. A level of 250 mg is then set, also every six hours, for Mefacit to have a therapeutic effect on the source of the pain. Usually it is used for about 2-3 days. Do not exceed the recommended dose, which is determined by your doctor. Use for more than 7 days is hazardous to the health of the patient. Do not give the drug to children under fourteen years of age.
Mefacit – composition
Mefacit tablet or suppository contains mefenamic acid, a derivative of the anthranilic acid. This substance inhibits the development of prostaglandins, which play a significant role in the formation of inflammation.
Mefacit – cena
Tablets are available in pharmacies in a concentration of 250 mg for about PLN 15,49 per packet containing 30 pieces in blisters.
Mefacit – precautions
Particular care should be taken if the patient is allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs called NSAIDs. Hypersensitivity to the active substance of the drug is an obstacle to its use. Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, heart disease, asthma, liver disease, inflammation of the rectal mucosa or haemorrhoids are contraindications to its use.
You should inform your doctor before starting treatment with Mefacit if you are taking oral anticoagulants, antidiabetic drugs, corticosteroids or methotrexate. The preparation should not be used during pregnancy and lactation.
The action of the drug is impaired in patients overusing tobacco, alcohol or drugs due to changes in the metabolism of the active substance.
The drug should not be abused by patients with renal insufficiency, because its component is metabolized and excreted in the urine, and due to the increased absorption of acid into the stomach, this process is quick and intense.
Mefacit – overdose
In the case of taking a significantly higher dose of the drug, use orally activated charcoal in a dose of about 60-100 g for an adult patient or 2 g for each kilogram of body weight in children. The doctor will recommend gastric lavage to remove the effects of intoxication, as well as monitoring of liver and kidney function and a control diuresis. Observation is obligatory for a minimum of 4 hours after drug overdose, so the sooner the patient comes to the check-up, the lower the risk of poisoning effects. Toxic effects of too high a dose are convulsions and renal insufficiency.
Mefacit – side effects

This preparation in the form of tablets can often cause discomforts such as upper abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomfort, digestive disorders, constipation, diarrhea, stomach damage, bleeding, inflammatory changes in the gastric mucosa, renal dysfunction, allergic rashes, liver problems, aches and pains. and dizziness. If, despite the doctor’s recommendations, the patient takes Mefacit in increased doses or for a long time, he may develop haemolytic anemia.
The preparation in the form of suppositories, in rare cases, causes allergic skin reactions, dizziness, pain, dyspeptic symptoms, bleeding from gastric ulcers, skin changes, and hematological changes.
