Medicinal properties of honey

Canadian scientists from the University of Ottawa investigated the effect of honey on 11 strains of microorganisms, including such dangerous pathogens as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Both pathogens often acquire resistance to antibiotics and, in this case, are practically unaffected.

It turned out that honey destroyed bacteria, both in the thickness of the liquid and in biofilms on the surface of the water. Its effectiveness was comparable to that of antibiotics, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria also died on contact with honey.

According to scientists, this study confirms the ability of honey to treat chronic rhinitis. Both viruses and bacteria are known to cause runny nose. Viral rhinitis does not require antibiotics and usually goes away on its own.

Bacterial rhinitis must be treated with antibiotics, but if the bacteria has acquired resistance to them, the disease can become persistent and chronic. In this case, honey can become effective replacement antibiotics and cure the disease, according to a report by Canadian scientists at the annual conference of the American community of otolaryngologists AAO-HNSF.
