Since the beginning of 2019, the number of people infected with the virus has increased.
Measles is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus. It is transmitted by airborne droplets. It is characterized by two-wave fever, catarrhal inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, eyes, and with a new increase in body temperature – the staged appearance on the body of a characteristic maculopapular rash, which subsequently leaves pigmentation.
95-96% of susceptible people (not vaccinated and not previously ill) who have been in contact with the patient, regardless of their age, get sick. An infected person becomes dangerous to others on the 7-11th day after contact with the measles virus.
The prognosis for uncomplicated measles is good. Complications can appear at any time of the disease. The most common damage to the respiratory system is observed: laryngitis, tracheobronchitis, pneumonia. Complications from the nervous system are observed with measles more often than with other diseases accompanied by a rash. Encephalitis develops mainly on the 5-8th day of illness. Fatal outcome is rare, mainly in children of the first year of life from complications.
In 2019, an outbreak of the disease was recorded in the neighboring countries of Russia: Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan. Dozens of measles patients were also registered in Russia: in Moscow, the Vladimir region, Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg and the North Caucasus.
The World Health Organization in 2019 named the refusal to vaccinate one of the main threats to public health.
