Collections of peppery, brutal, sometimes sad, but invariably funny aphorisms by Faina Ranevskaya (1896-1984) have already been published in dozens of editions, memoirs are willingly written about Ranevskaya, but here’s the paradox: this is her first biography.
Collections of peppery, brutal, sometimes sad, but invariably funny aphorisms by Faina Ranevskaya (1896-1984) have already been published in dozens of editions, memoirs are willingly written about Ranevskaya, but here’s the paradox: this is her first biography. The biography of Matvey Geyser seems to return Ranevskaya’s path and fate, which was not so fun. She had many episodic roles, the main ones were few. Her sharp tongue and inner freedom annoyed not only the authorities, but also the directors. In addition, comedy roles brought her fame, and she was also an actress with a deep dramatic talent. Matvey Geyser creates a portrait of his heroine from reflections of meetings and relationships: with Akhmatova, Tairov, Eisenstein, Zavadsky, Utyosov, Plyatt. This biography is partly amateur — without a deep archival leaven and with chronological jumps. And yet «amateur» from the word «love.» Geyser wrote about Ranevskaya with a very personal and almost loving tone.
