Material interest will help you lose weight

The experiment, organized by the staff of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, involved 57 weight loss patients who were tasked with losing 7,25 kg in 16 weeks. Some of the subjects got the opportunity to participate in regular raffles of cash prizes, which they could save only if they followed a pre-developed weight loss plan. The second group was forced to pay a certain amount to the cashier, which was written off if they lost weight quickly enough, but increased when the plan was overfulfilled. Finally, the control group lost weight without any incentives and fines.

By the end of the experiment, about half of the participants in the materially interested groups had achieved their goal. In the control group, there were only 10 percent of them. The subjects who received the prizes earned an average of $ 273 during the experiment, and those who risked their own investments – $ 378.

Within 7 months of completing the experiment, all of the rewarded participants regained weight, but even then, they weighed less than before participating in the study. Apparently, scientists believe, immediate reward for lost pounds is a significantly more effective motivating factor than the alleged recovery, which can only be expected in the distant future.

Recall that in the American state of Alabama, similar measures are already being practiced – a part of the salary is deducted from overweight people on a monthly basis.
