A few tips on how to sew a cardigan with your own hands
There are a variety of models of cardigans, but if you are just learning how to sew, choose something simple that you can create without a pattern. For example, products of a free cut for a belt, made of knitted fabric or an old scarf.
The cardigan can be sewn at home
What you need to know about sewing cardigans:
- they are mainly sewn from knitwear, sometimes you can use a thin fabric for a coat;
- the product should be loose to fit over the sweater;
- the jersey stretches, so sew it with a zigzag stitch;
- wash fabric and iron before use.
If you have chosen a material with a coarse knit, you can sew the product manually.
How to sew a knit cardigan without a pattern
If you use a material that does not crumble on the cuts, you can create a product in 30 minutes. For sizes 42–46, use a 160 cm wide piece of fabric, and determine the length at your discretion.
Fold the knit in half vertically. Measure from the top downwards 15 cm and from the free edge to the middle 20 cm. Under the intersection of the lines, make a 15 cm cut for the armhole. Take 2 rectangles 70 cm long and 30 cm wide and sew them along the long edge. This will give the sleeves to be sewn to the armhole. The cardigan is ready.
How to sew a scarf cardigan
A regular piece of fabric 2 m long and 70 cm wide is also suitable for sewing, but if you use a scarf with the same dimensions, the cardigan can be worn on both sides. For this method, it is also better to use a cloth that does not peel off at the cut.
Sewing stages:
- fold the fabric in 4 layers;
- in the corner at the fold, draw a neck 10 cm wide, cut it out;
- unfold 1 layer of fabric and cut the front in half;
- deepen the neck on the resulting shelves;
- process the cut edge with braid, you can leather;
- from the top edge, leave 25 cm on the armhole, overlap the rest to the bottom.
The finished product can be worn under a belt or buttons can be sewn to it.
