Master class: how to make a New Year’s dress yourself

It seems incredible, but the Ural stylists copied models of expensive brands from … a piece of fabric. You can do it too. In just 60 minutes. Watch our master class!

Our consultant is a stylist, clothing designer, teacher of stylistics and coloristics of the Ural Center for Consulting and Training “Image Algorithms” Svetlana Zaitseva. Together with her, we will try to copy two haute couture models from a piece of fabric – dresses from Lanvin and Pamella Roland.

The cost of a branded dress is more than 270 rubles

The cost of this dress £ 2,891.67, which is our money more than 270 rubles. It will cost us from 000 to 200 rubles.

1. We buy fabric. For such a dress, we need to buy only 1-1,5 meters of fabric with a width of 150 cm (depending on the girth of the hips). An easy way to determine how much fabric you need is to fold it in half and lay it on yourself right in the store. Choosing a fabric – knitted crush or corrugation. Such fabric is not at all expensive (from artificial fibers – up to 200 rubles per meter, from natural – from 1000 rubles), there are a lot of color options. Moreover, it is very easy to process. If you want to sew yourself a dress for one evening, then the edges of the dress made of such material do not need to be processed at all.

2. We sew a dress.

Step 1: Fold the fabric in half with the right side inward. We retreat from the upper cut down about 20 cm – this will be the neck cut. Below the neck, we make a seam 50–70 cm long (depending on your height and the desired cut). The front of your dress is now complete.

Step 2: Fix the middle of the back (it is convenient to do this on a mannequin) so that it does not slide out.

Step 3: We make the armholes of the sleeves: cut 15 cm on each side with scissors.

Step 4: Build the shoulders. The seam can be designed in different ways. It all depends on what kind of fabric you bought, what color and quality. You can make a regular seam – when you sew from the seamy side and hide the sections. Or you can make a seam on the front side and leave the cuts on the front side (as, in general, made by Lanvin).

There is a second option – to make the shoulder straight. To do this, you simply lay a seam from the inside out.

Step 5: Belt. In our case, the belt can simply be bought. And you can sew to match the dress. If the figure allows you to emphasize the waist, then emphasize.

The accent can be moved to the hips with the help of the belt. And the dress will play in a new way.

The focus can be shifted to the hips

3. Collar options.

With the same dress, there is another interesting option for the design of the collar – a stand-up.

Dress option with a stand-up collar

We bend 5 cm along the upper cuts of the neck of the front and back to the wrong side, we lay two seams – 3 and 4,5 cm.

You will need to buy a braid and thread it into the resulting drawstring. And insert the braid into the drawstring.

We get a stand-up collar. The braid can be in the color of the dress, it can serve as a decorative function.

Pamella Roland Train Dress

The price for such a dress is not even known yet.

This dress is from a new collection and is not even on sale yet. According to rough estimates, it can cost 250-350 thousand rubles.

1. Choosing fabrics.

We need:

– fabric for the base of the dress. We have a red viscose jersey about a meter with a width of 150 cm. How to determine how much fabric is needed: measure the volume of the hips and chest. We choose a larger value (in our case, the width of the hips is 90 cm), cut off from the width of the canvas 92 cm (with allowances).

– chiffon. This will be the top of the dress. It needs 2,80 m (1,4 meters for a cape and 1,4 meters for 2 trains).

– wide elastic band. Make sure it doesn’t stretch too much! Measure the girth on your own. The elastic should be tight to hold the dress. It should be understood that in the process of sewing it may stretch and weaken a little.

Measure the elastic by yourself

2. We sew a dress:

Step 1: Sew the elastic band tightly (it will hold the dress in the chest area, so we carefully measure it again so that the future dress does not fall off or the elastic is not too tight).

Step 2: We make a cover from the base of the dress – just lay one connecting seam.

Step 3: We put this “cover” on the elastic band. On the elastic we mark the middle of the front, the middle of the back and the side seams. Make the same marks on the dress. We combine the marks with pins. We sew a cover and an elastic band. In this case, the elastic must be slightly pulled. Do not forget to put a special seam on the machine for sewing on an elastic band or zigzag.

Step three – step by step

Step 4: Cover the case. We decide where the seam will be located: on the side or back. We will have it on the side. After that we take the first half of the chiffon (1,40 m). And we pin it to the elastic band. We pin the canvas loosely, with a margin so that it can stretch with the elastic. We wrap it around the whole dress.

Making a cape for a cover

Step 5: Divide the remaining piece of chiffon in half in width (the length remains the same, 140 cm) so that we get 2 parts. Along the upper cut, we lay 2 large lines for assembly on a typewriter. We assemble the fabric into an assembly by pulling on the threads. We place trains on the bodice of the dress, starting from the side and on the chest area. We pin it to the elastic band.

Step 6: We put a seam on a typewriter, connecting all 4 layers: an elastic band, a cover, a cape and 2 trains.

Step 7: Bend the elastic to the wrong side, put in the last seam connecting only the cover and the elastic! Please note that this last seam should simply secure the elastic, it should not be visible on the front of the finished product!
