It is very difficult to please combination skin, because it is all made up of contrasts and contradictions: oily here, dry there. Picking up a mask for her is an art. Let’s master it.
Causes and signs of mixed skin
What are the reasons for such contrasts?
Genetically determined activity of the sebaceous glands in the T-zone, multiplied by hormonal activity: high testosterone levels affect the intensity of sebum production.
Improper care: in the active fight against oily sheen and acne, intensively drying skin products are used in areas that are not prone to excess sebum, as a result, normal skin becomes dry and dehydrated, up to peeling.

Features and functions of masks for combination skin
To give the skin what it lacks is the main task of any masks. Only in the case of combination skin is it more difficult to perform.
Features of the composition of masks for combination skin
Mixed skin needs mixed care. More precisely, just in a clearly demarcated:
T-zone requires products for oily skin;
U-zone – for normal or dry.
Multimasking is the perfect solution for combination skin.
Varieties of masks for combination skin
Purifying. When we talk about mixed skin, we mean blackheads and a tendency to acne on the forehead, nose, and chin. Oily areas need intensive cleansing, pulling sebum out of the pores. This is the profile of clay masks. On dry and normal areas, exfoliating masks, for example, with fruit acids, are acceptable as cleansers.
For narrowing pores and matting. Enlarged pores and oily sheen are common problems of combination skin, since the T-zone has all the ills of oily skin.
Moisturizing. For combination skin, masks marked “for all skin types” are suitable.
Anti-aging. Anti-wrinkle masks are also required for mixed skin, since its dry areas are prone to dullness and premature aging. This is often due to the dehydration of these areas due to the intense fight against shine, blackheads, etc.
Rules for the use of masks at home
Preparation for application. Masks are applied only to cleansed skin. Previously, it is useful to use a scrub on oily areas of the skin and a gommage or peeling on dry ones. This will open access to active substances.
How to apply the mask? Usually, masks are applied to slightly damp, steamed skin. In the case of multimasking, you will need two or even three masks at once.
How long to keep? Cosmetologists do not recommend keeping homemade masks on your face for a long time. Acids from lemon, kiwi, and even apple can injure dry skin, that is, do not benefit, but harm. The same applies to homemade clay masks that can dry out the U-zone. Ready-made products, as a rule, work faster: they are kept from 3 to 10 minutes, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
How to wash off the mask correctly? The cleansing mask is usually washed off with water, as excess sebum and impurities are removed with it. The best way to do this is with a sponge. Flushing homemade masks can be quite a hassle given the risk of clogging the sink drain.
Ready-made moisturizing and anti-aging masks often do not require rinsing. The remains of the product are not removed, but gently rubbed into the skin. But this, alas, does not apply to homemade masks.
Care after the mask. The problem with rinsing is just in contact with water, after which the skin needs tonic and cream. That is why sheet, hydrogel and other masks that do not need to be washed off have advantages.
Which mask for combination skin to choose: homemade or purchased
Homemade | Purchased | |
composition | A very limited number of ingredients, while mixed skin requires a combination of different care options. | A well-thought-out variety of composition makes it possible to soften the action of some components to the necessary extent and avoid, for example, overdrying of dry areas. |
Marina Kamanina, expert dermatologist garnier | “Ready-made masks are good because each component is thoroughly cleaned and does not contain impurities. This also applies to clay. | |
Efficiency | Due to the limited bioavailability of the composition, the effect is rather superficial. | Technologies allow the active substances to have an intense and, most importantly, complex effect. |
Convenience | The uneven texture makes homemade masks not the most convenient cosmetic product. Their removal is also often associated with discomfort. | Ease of use is not the last requirement for the development of modern cosmetics. Obviously, sheet and hydrogel masks are more comfortable to use than those prepared in the kitchen. |
Ekaterina turubara, expert vichy | “The texture of pre-made cosmetic masks is more uniform, they do not contain lumps that are found in homemade clay masks and can injure the skin. There is only one minus – the cost is higher compared to a homemade mask. But this, in my opinion, is compensated by efficiency. |
Folk recipes vs professional remedies
Many ingredients in home recipes and formulas of beauty manufacturers are the same. However, ready-made cosmetic masks that have been tested for safety and effectiveness, according to the editors of Healthy-Food, outperform homemade ones. However, everyone chooses for himself.

Safety measures
Consider your skin type. With combination skin, the main thing is not to get carried away with products for oily skin, which are too intense for normal and dry areas.
Observe the frequency of use. Clay, charcoal and other cleansing masks should not be used more than twice a week.
Pay attention to composition. The formulas of moisturizing masks for combination skin (as well as for oily) do not include oils. Bet on hydraulic fixers. And ceramides are ideal as lipids. Do not follow the advice to fight oily sheen with coconut oil, which provokes comedones.
Use multimasking. This is the surest approach for combination skin: cleansing clay – on the nose, forehead and chin; light exfoliation and renewal – for the skin of the cheeks and chin; intensive moisturizing – on the cheekbones and temples (from “crow’s feet”). Below is a diagram that will help you remember the sequence better.
