Mascara in boxes and “Krasnaya Moskva”: what the beauty industry was like in the 80s
Let’s remember what helped our moms to charm dads.
Highlighter, concealer, contouring kit – thank God, now there is such a huge selection of cosmetics that the only difficulty is to stop at one thing. But it was, of course, not always so – being a woman in the 80s is much more difficult than it is today.
Beauty Salons
Peeling, shugaring, lifting – in 2019, ignorance of these words will seem strange. But in the 80s, they did not even hear about this.
Beauty salons already existed – their “progenitors” appeared many centuries ago, and Peter I brought barbershops with foreign masters to Russia.
In the USSR, there were already the first cosmetology rooms – there they looked after hair and did massages.
Well, and, of course, you can’t do without hairdressing salons – of course, fashionable women could only dream of modern care systems and harmless hair lightening and paint removers, but it was quite possible to make a haircut like that of a famous actress.
Hairstyles
How do we remember the 80s? Incredibly feminine and bright hairstyles. Our mothers twisted them completely without the help of tourmaline-coated irons – even the most ordinary curling iron at that time was a luxury.
Do you want curls? You can sleep on iron curlers, or you can buy electric “Lokon”.
The curling iron was also replaced by heat rollers: before you hook them on your hair, you had to heat them yourself in water.
Makeup
What comes to mind when we hear “80s cosmetics”? Well, of course, the legendary mascara in rectangular boxes!
Every fashionista had a block of “Leningradskaya” – a special brush was attached to the box, but it was not very good, and it was often replaced with the most ordinary toothbrush. And they separated the cilia with needles: it seems that for modern curling irons and the usual mascara itself, the beauties of the 80s would give a lot. And it’s not worth talking about extended eyelashes!
Compact powder was then only in the West, and in the USSR they used loose powder with a sweetish smell. And they fixed, of course, one more legendary thing – Ballet cream.
By the way, even then domestic factories were producing powders for different types of skin – in red washers with the inscription “Leningradskaya” one could buy powder for normal and oily skin.
Of the foreign cosmetics, Ruby Rose palettes and lipsticks were the most popular: thanks to them, one could venture into beauty experiments, because they produced shadows of any shade – from the usual brown and gray to bright green, yellow and even red.
Perfume
Of course, there were no huge perfumery supermarkets, and Chanel # 5 or Opium from YSL were much more luxury than they are now.
The same (and again legendary) perfume “Krasnaya Moskva” was popular. The bouquet, by the way, is quite popular today – jasmine, rose and spices.
And for those who were lucky, the most popular fragrances there came from abroad: Climat from Lancome, L’Air du Temps from Nina Ricci or Anais Anais from Cacharel. They used such perfumes with special economy, because buying a new bottle is a whole story.
