Martini Royale Cocktail: 5 Recipes + History and Ingredients

Hello reader! Today we will get acquainted with the refreshing cocktail Martini Royale, which was created by a Russian bartender. This drink has a pleasant taste with sourness and some astringency, and is distinguished by a beautiful presentation that will delight guests at the party and allow them to take many beautiful photos.

History of the Martini Royale

Unlike many other popular cocktails, Martini Royale is still very young. It was invented in 2002 by our compatriot. Bartender Denis Temny participated in the competition held by the Bacardi brand (Bacardi limited produces Martini vermouth). His author’s recipe was recognized as one of the best, and Denis became the official ambassador of Bacardi. His cocktail gained particular popularity in 2010, when it became the official drink at the Cannes Film Festival.

Please note that the “Royal” in the title is not the laurels of a musical instrument at all, but a variant of the sound in Russian of the word royal, which means “royal” in English. Sometimes the name of the cocktail is written as “Martini Royale” (Martini Royale).

Strength and calories

100 ml Martini Royale contains 101 kcal. The standard portion is 220 ml, that is, it contains 222 kcal. This is not very much, although those who follow the figure should not get too carried away with this cocktail – it is drunk very easily, and you can consume 1000-1500 liquid calories per evening without noticing.

The average strength of Martini Royale is 10-13%. It can be slightly lower or higher – it all depends on how strong sparkling wine you use when cooking.

How and with what to drink

Martini Royale is drunk through a straw. The cocktail turns out to be refreshing, so it is the best suited for summer evenings and beach parties. A snack can be seafood or various fruits with a sweet and sour taste.

Classic cocktail recipe

Martini Royale is a cocktail with Prosecco (an Italian brand of sparkling wine). In the original recipe, you need to take it, and if you want to use a different wine or replace some of the ingredients, you can prepare alternative cocktail options (I will also talk about them below).

Composition and proportions

The classic Martini Royale recipe includes the following ingredients:

  • white vermouth Martini Blanco – 75 ml;
  • sparkling wine Prosecco – 75 ml;
  • freshly squeezed lime juice – 10 ml;
  • ice cubes;
  • a sprig of mint.

Above is the classic proportion 75/75/10. However, there are alternatives: 100/100/15 (a portion of the cocktail is more voluminous) or 75/150/… (most of it is sparkling wine, and the amount of lime juice is regulated by the bartender independently, depending on how sour the drink should turn out).

Technology of preparation

Step by step cooking Martini Royale:

  1. Pour ice cubes into a glass.
  2. Squeeze out some lime juice.
  3. Add vermouth and mix thoroughly so that the sourness from the juice is evenly distributed.
  4. Top with Prosecco and gently stir again with a bar spoon.

Martini Royale is served in a tall wine glass. Mint and lime slices are used as a decoration (they can be put directly on the ice to add flavor and aroma to the drink).

Possible options

The classic recipe is not the only way to make a Martini Royale cocktail. It has several variations: some of them are simplified versions of the original cocktail, while others replace some of the ingredients and offer new interesting combinations. Let’s see what alternative recipes there are for Martini Royale.

 “Light Martini Royale”

Composition:

  • white vermouth Martini – 75 ml;
  • dry sparkling wine – 75 ml;
  • slice of lemon.

How to make: This is an extremely simplified version of the original, so all you have to do is pour the martini over ice and top it with sparkling wine (Prosecco is optional in this recipe). A slice of lemon is placed in a glass for decoration. You can gently squeeze a few drops of lemon juice out of it, but you need to do this so that the slice does not lose its appearance.

 “Green Martini Royale”

Composition:

  • white vermouth Martini – 75 ml;
  • Italian lemon liqueur Limoncello – 75 ml;
  • cooled green tea – 30 ml;
  • a few slices of lime;
  • a few mint leaves.

How to cook:

  1. Put ice into a glass.
  2. Pour in the liquor, followed by green tea (in no case should it be hot, otherwise the walls of the glass may crack).
  3. Add vermouth and mix thoroughly.

At the end, you need to squeeze a little juice from the lime slices and put them in a glass along with mint. You can rub it a little with your fingers so that the leaves give off flavor.

General recommendations

Traditionally, this drink is prepared with white vermouth (Martini Blanco). But feel free to experiment and add vermouths from other series to get new combinations: for example, with red Martini Rosso you will get a rich caramel taste, and pink Martini Rosato will add spicy notes of cloves. Together with Rosato, you can also use pink sparkling wine: the cocktail will turn out to be very unusual and girls will like it with its rich color.

It is also permissible to experiment with a strong alcoholic component of the cocktail. For example, instead of vermouth, you can use cognac or rum – the combination will turn out to be more strict and suitable for men. And in order to prepare a non-alcoholic Martini Royale, they use sugar syrup, lime, fruit syrup and carbonated tonic.
