Marshmallow officinalis (Latin name altbaea officinalis) is popularly called mallow. It is a perennial plant, reaching a height of one and a half meters. Its roots contain up to 35% of mucous substances (polysaccharides), which have anti-inflammatory, emollient and enveloping properties.
Medicinal properties of marshmallow
Even the name of the plant, which is translated from Greek as “the one that heals”, speaks about the healing properties of marshmallow.
Marshmallow has a taproot, which, in addition to beneficial polysaccharides, contains starch, pectin and fat, which have high nutritional value. Mallow grows in damp meadows, along river banks, on forest edges, near roads. The plant is distributed mainly in the European part of Russia, in Belarus and southern Ukraine. Marshmallow leaves are eaten stewed, boiled and even raw; the root of the plant is also edible, which must be boiled before use.
The roots, flowers and leaves of the plant have healing properties. Especially valuable are the roots of the plant, known for their analgesic and expectorant effects. Due to the high content of polysaccharides, which have a softening effect and prevent the inflamed mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract from irritating, damaged tissues regenerate faster, and inflammation stops.
Marshmallow roots are harvested in the fall, when the stems die off and sap flow stops. The root is dug up, washed in cold water and, without removing the bark, is finely cut, and then dried in the oven or in the air. It is necessary to store the prepared raw materials in a cool dry place in closed wooden boxes, and the powder prepared from the roots – in a glass container. The shelf life of raw materials should not exceed 3 years.
Folk remedy for bronchitis: mix 50 g each of thyme and marshmallow root. Pour in 4 tsp. collection with a glass of water, leave for 2 hours, then bring to a boil, cool and drink in three divided doses throughout the day
In folk medicine, decoctions and infusions are prepared from the roots of mallow, which help with skin inflammation, bronchitis and cough. They are irreplaceable as a sedative and enveloping agent for severe gastrointestinal diseases, inflammation of the bladder.

Application and contraindication of marshmallow root syrup

First of all, you need to prepare an extract from the marshmallow root. To do this, fill the marshmallow root with hot water (in a ratio of 10: 200), then close the lid tightly and heat in a boiling water bath for half an hour. Then strain and transfer to a ceramic pot. Cover it with a lid, cover with dough and set to evaporate in a Russian oven for 2 hours. The extract should decrease by 2 times.
Then prepare the sugar syrup, for which take 64 parts refined sugar and 35 parts water. Stir sugar in water well, put on a quiet fire. When the thick, sugar syrup begins to simmer, add 4 parts of homemade marshmallow root extract to it. Stir well again and remove from heat. It is recommended to drink homemade cough syrup half a glass 3 times a day.
Traditional healers advise adding 2-3 teaspoons of natural bee honey to a decoction of marshmallow root, which contains glucose and a whole complex of vitamins and itself has healing properties. You can also add a few drops of anise oil to the finished syrup. Judging by the reviews, this is a very effective remedy for bronchitis and severe cough. It should be taken externally 1-2 teaspoons several times a day. It is considered optimal 4-5 times a day.
Currently, marshmallow root syrup enjoys well-deserved popularity and is often used by official medicine in pediatrics. It is prescribed as a potent expectorant for bronchitis and acute inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.
For children, as a rule, an infusion of marshmallow root is mixed with sugar or natural fruit syrup and the prepared remedy is given a teaspoon of up to 5 times a day. The course of treatment is 10-15 days.
For adolescents over 12 years old and adults, it is recommended to dilute a tablespoon of syrup in half a glass of warm water and take it before meals.
Althea syrup has practically no contraindications, so even pregnant women can use it. But before starting the course of treatment, you need to consult a doctor. And if an allergic reaction occurs, treatment should be stopped immediately and consult your doctor.

Although marshmallow root syrup has no contraindications, it should be taken with great caution in patients with diabetes mellitus; it is also not recommended to combine syrup with other drugs that slow down cough reflexes and thicken phlegm.
