A laconic masterpiece of cocktail art, which consists of only four ingredients. To make a Margarita you will need tequila. The classic recipe uses silver. It is the least expensive, has a simple and understandable taste and goes well with the rest of the ingredients.

Two ingredients will be responsible for the citrus notes in the cocktail. It’s Triple Sec liqueur and lemon/lime juice. Salt in the cocktail completes the flavor ensemble.

Classic Margarita Cocktail Recipe at Home

This cocktail is good because it can be prepared with a full set of bartending equipment or you can do with improvised utensils, which many people have in the kitchen. In addition to two types of strong alcohol, salt and citrus fruits, you will need ice in cubes. Shaker, strainer and jigger will come in handy. But no one will forbid taking a thermos or other resealable container, a strainer and a simple glass at home. Let’s move on to the step-by-step instructions for making a Margarita cocktail

Proportions

Tequila  35-50 ml
Liqueur Triple Sec  25 ml
Lemon or lime juice  15-20 ml
Ice  100-200 g
Salt  3-4 grams (half a teaspoon)

Step 0. Preparatory stage

We lay out the ingredients and utensils that we need on the table. Everything should be at hand so that you do not have to be distracted in the process.

Step 1. Serve a glass

Many, seeing salt in Margarita’s recipe, are surprised: is it really necessary to add salt to the ice drink? No, we’ll make everything more subtle.

Sprinkle salt on a saucer or cutting board and spread the crystals. Ideally, the salt should be coarse.

Slice a lime or lemon wedge and run it 360 degrees around the rim of the glass. Flip the glass over and swirl the rim over the salt to create a white rim. In professional slang, it is called “crust”.

Step 2. Mixing the ingredients

Pour all our ingredients into a shaker: lemon / lime juice, tequila, liqueur. If necessary, replace the measured jigger with a glass. Add ice to shaker.

Important!

You need to put ice in drinks, and not vice versa. Because while you are measuring alcohol, the ice will begin to melt and give unnecessary water. If you have a lot of ice and want to do everything according to the classics, then the first step is to pour ice into the shaker so that the vessel cools. Then we throw out the ice and pour out the melt water. Then alcohol and ice again.

Step 3. Beat

Close the shaker and hold the halves tightly with both hands. When you start shaking, the pressure inside will rise and the lid or the second half of the shaker will definitely want to open and start flowing. Don’t let him do it. Shake until the shaker is covered with ice condensate – it means the drink has reached the optimum temperature.

Step 4. Pour into a glass

To prevent broken ice particles and large citrus pulp from getting into the glass, bartenders use a stainer. Sometimes a filter is already installed on the shaker. If none of this is at home, then take a tea strainer.

Step 5. Decorate the glass

Seating a circle of lime on the edge is the simplest and most effective solution. You can drop the straw. But in general, according to the classic recipe, Margarita is drunk without a straw. After all, you have prepared a salty land. Then, in combination with salt, the original taste of the cocktail is obtained.

bartending tips

In addition to the story about the cocktail recipe, we asked bartender Yusufa Boyajji give some advice on the preparation of the drink.

– The heroes of the series “Friends” drank Margarita in jugs. Strictly speaking, this is not a classic recipe. The peculiarity of the cocktail and its uniqueness lies precisely in the fact that, based on the same basic ingredients, mixed in exact proportions, one serving of the drink is prepared. And then another, and another, and another. The acidity and spiciness of the lime pairs well with the salt, while the Triple Sec complements the flavor of the tequila.

— Margarita has dozens of variations. Now it is prepared with grapefruit, avocado, sparkling wine is added to get the standard 200 ml of drink. One of the most careless, but at the same time interesting recipes for a large company: this is freshly squeezed orange juice with ice instead of Triple Seca and tequila. By the way, Triple Sec, even in the classic recipe, can be replaced with Cointreau liqueur.

– The International Bartenders Association (IBA) has fixed the recipe for the classic Margarita in its documents. They suggest taking 50 ml of 100% agave tequila, 20 ml of Triple Sec liqueur and 15 ml of freshly squeezed lime juice. At the same time, the recipe allows replacing silver tequila with reposado – this drink is aged in barrels, it is more spicy.

What glass should you drink Margarita from? Best of all from a glass of the same name. But it holds 250 or 440 ml, so if you cook one serving, it looks empty. Therefore, the bartenders have finalized the cocktail recipe. A classic drink can be served in a martini glass. Now bars also use old-fashioned glasses or a tumbler, clogging them with crushed ice.

The history of the Margarita cocktail

Many drinks have their own exact biography with the place of origin and even the name of the inventor. However, the history of the Margarita cocktail is covered in legends. There are several versions of the birth of this mix. Judging by the fact that it contains tequila, the drink appeared in the border states of the United States and Mexico. This was either at the end of the 30s after the removal of the Prohibition, or a little later.

Some historians claim that for the first time Margarita was made by a bartender from Mexican Tijuana. Allegedly, he wanted to please a lady named Marjorita, who could not stand any alcohol other than tequila, but it was unsuitable for a girl to drink it in its pure form. Another version says that the noble lady Margarita Samees from Acapulco served this cocktail at her party. There is a very romantic story: allegedly the bartender Red Hinton, in memory of a deceased friend named Margarita, came up with this drink. Another conspiracy theory says that all the legends are the fantasies of tequila producers whose revenue has fallen. With a cocktail, they decided to revive the popularity of their drink.
