Children love to dress up! Often a piece of fabric is enough for their happiness, but they also appreciate more sophisticated outfits. Spiderman, Batman, Harry Potter, Elsa (yes Frozen is still in fashion, and the new costumes are great!) Are still popular. Just like the dinosaur, lion and Red Riding Hood outfits… Even if you have preferences, it’s important to let your child choose his costume.
Why do children like to dress up?
By putting on a disguise, the child can become an “other” for a moment. It stimulates his imagination and creativity. With his cape and mask, he imagines himself with superpowers. Disguised as a dragon or a bear, he begins to move like them. And by disguising himself as a wolf or a monster, he faces his fears and gains self-confidence. Dressing up is a symbolic game par excellence that appeals to children from 2 and a half or 3 years old. At this age, it’s really magical for them to be able to transform and become themselves again, once the disguise is removed. For older children, from 4-5 years old, dressing up helps them plan for the future. They imagine themselves as a doctor, a pilot or a firefighter … Or always a princess or Harry Potter. Because their imagination is limitless, and that’s good.
