Mammoplasty: myths and prejudices

Unfortunately, many people are still convinced that breast plastic surgery is the lot of glamorous girls who are preoccupied with their appearance, or women who experience any complexes.

And there are a lot of rumors about the operation itself: painful recovery, many restrictions, high cost, “silicone disease” that covers everyone who has performed the operation at least once … We asked Georgy Eduardovich Karapetyan, Doctor of Medical Sciences and a plastic surgeon with many years of experience, to dispel the most common myths about mammoplasty – especially for those who are increasingly thinking about it, but cannot yet decide.

Myth 1: The desire to have plastic surgery is a sign of complexes or any psychological difficulties.

Of course, condemning a woman who decides to undergo plastic surgery is the height of ignorance. Patients have a variety of reasons for plastic surgery: congenital defects, the consequences of trauma, burns, operations, aesthetic changes in appearance, including age-related … Yes, some of these factors can cause psychological discomfort or even complexes, but should they to put up with it?

It is important to understand that a good plastic surgeon must first be a psychologist. He must not only understand whether the operation will be able to solve the patient’s problem, but also, if necessary, convince her that in this case mammoplasty is not necessary at all. It is the elucidation of the true motives and the establishment of medical indications that should become the basis for the interaction of a plastic surgeon and a patient.

Myth 2: Any mammoplasty looks unnatural, it is immediately clear from the shape of the breast that it is not “right”

Unfortunately, those who have not yet managed to see the result of the work of a highly professional surgeon say so, and only unsuccessful cases of mammoplasty have met. After all, improperly selected implants, technical errors in performing the operation, lack of possession of modern technologies and knowledge can lead to an unaesthetic (“unnatural”) result …

However if plastic surgeon has many years of experience, an accumulated knowledge base and modern working techniques, most likely, having seen his patient, you simply will not be able to understand that this is the result of his work, and not a breast given to a woman by nature.

Myth 3: After any type of mammoplasty, a long recovery period is needed: difficult breast care, wearing only special underwear, you will have to forget about physical activity, do not sunbathe or swim for a while …

This myth is best refuted by that memowhich I give to my patients after the operation (of course, performed using modern technologies):

  • you can lead a normal life, limiting yourself only to heavy physical activity for five to six days;

  • you can raise your hands immediately, without restrictions;

  • it is recommended to wear special underwear for no more than ten days;

  • you can take a shower two hours after the operation;

  • you can drive a car in five days;

  • picking up children is permissible in two weeks;

  • you can engage in active sports in a month and a half;

  • go in for professional sports – in three months.

4 Myth: You cannot do plastic surgery before all the planned children are born, because during pregnancy and lactation, the breast shape will “float” and the implants will inevitably shift. Besides, after the operation, you shouldn’t breastfeed at all …

If you go to a highly qualified surgeon, it does not matter in what period of your life mammoplasty is performed: before or after childbirth. For example, technology developed and patented by me for performing mammoplasty excludes both the displacement of implants and the violation of the milk ducts during the operation. In this matter, I cannot be responsible for all specialists, but I know for sure that my patients after mammoplasty breastfeed their babies without hindrance.

As for the implants themselves, they do not move anywhere, since they are installed under the muscle. But the changes that occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding (stretching, loss of elasticity) will be the same both with and without implants.

In any case, when deciding on an operation, it is important to discuss all your life plans with a high-level specialist.

Myth 5: The result of mammoplasty is short-lived – any implants require mandatory correction (and the older the woman, the more often the correction is required).

This myth is partially true: in the modern world, all prostheses (teeth, joints, lenses, etc.) in the human body are not eternal. Breast implants may also require replacement after 15-25 years – of course, with confirmation in the form of ultrasound results and a doctor’s examination.

More frequent correction may not require implants, but the skin of the breast, which changes over the years, stretches and loses its elasticity. However, it is important to understand that this process does not depend on the presence or absence of implants – it is natural for the human body in any case.

We assure you that there is no connection between age and the frequency of correction and loss of the shape of implants.

6 Myth: Mammoplasty is a mature, routine operation that any plastic surgeon can perform

This is a very dangerous myth that I want to disassemble point by point:

1. All patients are absolutely unique, which means they require individual solutions and approach.

2. The experience, skills and knowledge of the surgeon should allow him to perform mammoplasty, based on the individual characteristics of the patient.

3. This requires not only a high level of knowledge and professionalism, but also an extensive practical experience.

4. An international-level specialist, faced with any problems, is constantly looking for solutions: studies, scientific developments, articles, patents, exchange of experience with colleagues around the world.

Only a combination of these factors will help to avoid complications during the operation, to obtain a positive aesthetic result and the easiest rehabilitation of the patient.

Let me give you a clear example: over 15 years of practice, I have developed and patented 22 copyright techniques for plastic surgery, including mammoplasty. And I continue to develop new ones. In total, I have performed more than 3500 mammoplasty procedures. Even having such a tremendous experience, I will never dare to call such an operation a routine.

In no case should you chase “promotions” on mammoplasty, and also try to save money by coming to an unknown clinic or to a novice doctor. Please carefully approach the search process and choose an expert-level specialist who will save your health! For even more mammoplasty tips, visit doctor’s website.
