Malgacid – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Malgacid is used to relieve the symptoms of hyperacid gastric juice in the course of heartburn, gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. The active substance is hydrotalcite. The drug is in the form of lozenges and is available without a prescription.

Malgacid – indications and dosage

Malgacid are lozenges recommended for use:

  1. to relieve the symptoms of gastric hyperacidity,
  2. in the course of heartburn,
  3. during gastritis,
  4. in gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Drug dosage

Malgacid is in the form of lozenges and is intended for oral use. The tablets should be sucked until dissolved. Treatment should be carried out for at least four weeks in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers, and even after all symptoms have resolved.

  1. Adults and children after the age of 14: 1-2 tablets. 3-4 × / d 1-2 hours after meals and at bedtime.

Malgacid and contraindications

There are the following contraindications to the use of Malgacid:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. severe kidney failure, especially in dialysis patients,
  3. fenyloketonuria.

Malgacid – warnings

  1. The drug should be used with caution in patients with renal insufficiency for whom it is recommended to measure the concentration of aluminum and magnesium in the blood.
  2. Caution should be exercised in patients with skeletal disorders and those with Alzheimer’s.
  3. Aluminum, in combination with phosphates in the digestive tract, forms insoluble compounds.
  4. Taking the drug for too long reduces the absorption of phosphorus, which may result in its deficiency.
  5. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may take the preparation only after prior consultation with a doctor and with absolute necessity.

Malgacid with other medications

  1. Malgacid reduces the absorption of: tetracyclines, digoxin, atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, antihistamines, chenodeoxycholic acid, fluoroquinolones, chloroquine, glucocorticosteroids, indomethacin, phenothiazine neuroleptics, penicillamine, iron, orally taken ketoconazole.
  2. Malgacid increases the renal secretion of salicylates.
  3. The preparation may reduce the effectiveness of gastro-resistant tablets, so leave at least 1 hour between taking Malgacid and enteral preparations.
  4. Do not take the preparation within 3-4 hours of taking tetracyclines.

Malgacid and side effects

Taking Malgacid may cause the following side effects:

  1. diarrhea
  2. constipation
  3. flatulence
  4. nausea.
  5. kidney problems (when high doses are taken for more than 2 weeks),
  6. increase in aluminum and decrease in phosphorus in the blood (hypophosphataemia) resulting in: malaise, muscle weakness, loss of appetite and insufficient bone mineralization.
