Malfunctions of Brandt washing machines – do-it-yourself repair

If the instruction manual for the Brandt washing machine is lost without a trace, and you are faced with a breakdown, then you should resort to the services of a master or carry out repairs yourself.

Brandt cars came to Russia not so long ago, but in Europe their production has been mass-produced since the 50s of the last century. Manufacturers managed to win the sympathy of customers due to a reasonable price and excellent technical characteristics.

Repair of Brandt washing machines (Brandt) is associated with some difficulties, which we will consider further.

The most typical breakdowns of Brandt machines

Over 20 years of operation of French Brandt cars, domestic workshops have already collected a huge knowledge base about breakdowns and the reasons for their occurrence. At first glance, these are very reliable washing machines, but in the CIS, mostly cheap models are in demand. For Brandt machines from the low price category, the parts are not so reliable, and the assembly is not always excellent.

All Brandt cars are united by such typical failures:

1. Drain pump failure. This problem most often overtakes models of a vertical type. Pumps in such machines serve no more than 5 years.
2. System blockages. This is a common breakdown of any car, regardless of brand and model. Blockages prevent the machine from washing normally or make this process very problematic.
3. Thermal sensor. This is the “Achilles heel” of any Brandt machine – expensive or budget. Often temperature sensors need to be replaced already 3 years after the purchase of the washer.
4. Thermoelectric heater (TEN). This is also a weak point of any Brandt branded machine. Moreover, the heating element can break both after 15 years of operation, and in the first year of service. It depends not so much on the quality of the part, but on external factors – water quality and compliance with operating rules.

Important! Other parts of Brandt washers are reliable and durable and break down much less often than the units listed above, so we will not talk about them further.

Trouble codes can also help you figure out the problem. The decoding of such codes is usually given in the manual. Most often, Brand washers give error codes: d01, d02, d03, d07 or ER12.

Self-repair Brandt: how feasible is it

Often, owners of SM Brandt begin to worry about the first failures only after 10 years of use. And before the first breakdown, the machine can work absolutely without failures.

If the SMA is too old, the first difficulty will be finding parts for it. Dealers who import parts from Europe often have only the most popular parts. The easiest way for a typewriter of this brand is to buy such parts:

• Drain pumps.
• Pulleys.
• Drive belts.
• Shock absorbers.
• Hoses and pipes.
• Drum shells.
• Gaskets and rings.
• Top panels.
• TENY.

Relatively low prices are kept for electronic controllers and display panels, although they can not always be found in the Russian Federation, and you will have to order from abroad.

The engine is hard to find. You can wait for the original part for more than a month, and it can “fly into a penny.”

Important! Brandt machine parts are also made in China (China), but their quality is much lower than European. The Chinese produce only the required components and spare parts.

We eliminate blockages in the Brandt washing machine

If you started repairing a Brandt washing machine with your own hands, start by clearing blockages. Moreover, if you have never cleaned the machine, it will only benefit it. Blockages are a real scourge of machines, because few people go through things before washing and extract every little thing from them. And we cannot influence the quality of water in the pipes at all.

If the Brandt top-loading washing machine is to be repaired, then it has its own specifics: they are arranged a little differently, unlike their vertical “brothers”.

The drain filter is located inside the housing. For example, in SM Brandt WM-1150, the manufacturer has provided for the location of the filter in the tank. If this seems complicated to you, we will dissuade you: finding a filter is extremely simple:

• With our own hands we remove one flap of the cover on the drum, and do not touch the second, it is not involved in the repair.
• We unfold the drum and open its doors.
• We are looking for a filter (located at the bottom of the tank).
• We take out, clean, rinse under the tap.
• We screw the sash into place and restore the location of the drum.

Attention! Cleaning the filter and nozzles should be tightly included in the schedule of your household chores – pay attention to the drain system at least 3-4 times a year. If you neglect this advice, the quality of washing will sooner or later fall, or maybe the washing will stop altogether.

If the filter is cleaned to the conscience, but the water still stands and does not drain, then the nozzles need to be cleaned. They can be accessed through the rear panel. Having found the nozzles, arm yourself with a screwdriver and loosen the clamps, drain the water and remove the nozzles.

Important! Despite the fact that the nozzles are wide, debris still manages to collect in them, so do not ignore their cleaning.

No less often, the water intake valves are clogged in Brandt CMA. In typewriters typical of our country – Ariston, Indesit or Atlant – the filters are designed for a large volume of water with a considerable percentage of impurities (and they are located differently). In Brandt washing machines, for some reason, filters are designed for soft and clean water, so they get clogged 2-3 times faster than competitive models from other brands. Cleaning, replacing or completely abandoning water filtration are possible scenarios for the development of events.

How to clean the water inlet filter in a Brandt typewriter

1. Shut off the water supply valve.
2. Disconnect the intake hose.
3. Using round nose pliers or pliers, remove the filter.
4. Clean and rinse.
5. Reinstall or replace with a new one.

If you have not found another filter and decided to completely remove the old one, then be aware that the masters do not advise completely removing the filter. Much more dirt will enter the machine than before, and the fill and drain systems will have to be cleaned even more often.

Heating element and temperature sensor in a Brandt car: a mutual problem

In Brand vertical machines, it is much easier to check and change the heating element and thermistor (temperature sensor) than in conventional machines. If the water does not heat up or overheats, then you need to check both units – both the heating element and the sensor.

We act in sequence:

1. Unscrew the back panel (use a 10mm Phillips screwdriver).
2. After removing the panel, you will see a pulley on which the drive belt is put on. Next, the wall of the tank, the engine and the side – the pump. Immediately above the motor there is a plug, under which we hide what we need – both the heating element and the sensor.
3. You take off the plug.
4. Release the sensor and heater from the wires.
5. Take a tester and first check the sensor – first at room temperature, then by heating it in a glass of warm water. A working sensor will display different indicators on the tester screen. Broken will show 0-1.
6. Check the heating element if the sensor is working. If the resistance value is not in the range of 20-40 ohms, then the heating element is burned out or shorted. Together with the gasket, take it out of the tank and install a new heater.
7. Return the sensor. Connect wiring.

If you did not quickly find the original heating element for your model, do not install a similar one! It is better to order an original part and wait for it, otherwise you risk “earning” also a breakdown of the electronic module.

The water drain pump (pump) in the Brandt typewriter broke

A pump for a Brandt washing machine can be easily bought in the Russian Federation – there will be no difficulties with it, since the part is in demand, and they carry it regularly. You can easily replace the pump yourself, but pay attention to one important point: make sure you definitely need a replacement pump.

Do the following:

• Clean the pipes (you can also drain the water hose too).
• As described above, get through the back of the machine to the pump.
• Remove the wires from it (remember, take a picture or mark the location of the wires, so that later you can assemble everything as it was, otherwise you will burn the board).
• Measure the winding resistance with a tester.
• Remove the pump from the mountings by unscrewing the bolts.
• Pull out the pump slowly.
• Try twisting the impeller in both directions. In a broken pump, it spins with difficulty.
• Buy an original part and install in reverse order.

Attention! After removing the pump, inspect it for blockages – often they are in the sleeve, which significantly interferes with work. If the cause of the failure is a blockage, then the pump does not need to be changed, especially if the tester did not show any deviations.

Do-it-yourself electronics repair in a Brandt typewriter

If you have come to the conclusion that all the systems of your machine are working, then the problem may be in the controller (control module). To repair or replace the board, you need not only the Brandt washing machine circuit, but certain knowledge and experience.

We strongly do not recommend doing self-repair in this case – you can either break the SM or increase the cost of the repair.
