Make the most of your fall break

How and why to use the precious time of the autumn holidays? How to combine the seemingly incompatible: to let the child sleep, rest, switch and at the same time not lose the fighting spirit – after all, back to school in a week? The opinion of the family psychotherapist Inna Khamitova.

“It is important to take care of everything, but you need to start with the organization of recreation – school holidays, including autumn ones, are designed specifically for this. To relax and switch, try to do what you always wanted, but your hands did not reach. Take a closer look at the child, talk to him and find out what he would put in the first place – after all, this is his vacation! It’s good if the recreation program is varied: during the holidays, time is freed up and you can do everything – take a walk, read, play sports … And for parents – finally communicate with children who in ordinary life are completely loaded with lessons.

Many families prefer to leave the country, but here it is important to refrain from changing the climate zone: do not plan trips to warm countries in autumn and winter. Especially in the case of younger students and teenagers. The reason is simple: it takes two weeks for the body to adapt to the climate, and since this time is not there, the child receives a double blow to the immune system. On the other hand, in order to have a good rest during the holidays, it is not at all necessary to leave somewhere. You can imagine yourself as a tourist in your own city and behave as if you came to visit: walking enthusiastically, sightseeing, going to museums and exhibitions, dining in cafes, not housekeeping. Just do not overdo it with the cultural program. If the child does not want only (or so many) attractions, it is important to think of something else: spending time together should be enjoyable for all participants. Rollers means rollers. Concert means concert.

On vacation days, balance and a reasonable approach are generally important. You can’t go crazy: sleep until noon, go to bed deep after midnight … But it doesn’t make sense to get up like school, at seven in the morning, and at nine already doing homework also does not make sense. Usually, during the week of autumn holidays, children do not have time to break away from their usual routine, but you can help them (without fanaticism) to reach the finish line in a normal state so that it is easier for them to get up the next Monday and go to school. For the same reasons, you should not stop attending sections and circles, as well as gradually do the assigned lessons, not leaving them for the last day or evening … A week of freedom and doing nothing can prevent children from returning to stress, and parents should take care not to create a child additional stress.

Don’t let him stare at the TV. Watching TV shows is a completely passive way of getting pleasure: the child is shown a picture, he is entertained. At the same time, he does not train imagination, creative thinking, or creativity. One or two (cartoon) films a day is enough. As for the computer, it should not be devoted to it all day either, despite the fact that games, unlike television programs, train fine motor skills, imagination and creativity. They have a different difficulty: a playing child finds himself in a completely different world, plunges into it with his head, and it can be quite difficult for him to emerge from there. As a rule, those children whose parents are not free during the holidays stick to the screens. Fortunately, in our time it has become easier to organize a recreation and entertainment program for a child: you can always try to search for something on the Internet, or just ask your friends on Facebook – you will be surprised how much they will advise you!

The closer the end of the holidays, the worse the mood of the child … And the point is often not that he has weaned from school in a week: he simply does not burn with the desire to learn. Of course, there are schools where the programs are built correctly and the children are doing well. But in general – get up early in the morning, go somewhere in the dark … Autumn is the most depressing time of the year, which is why it is necessary to make sure that there are more joys in life. Including during school holidays. And after they run out, you should not load the child with everything at once. Let it gradually and smoothly enter the working rhythm. Don’t expect him to show maximum results in the first days.”
