Magnesium during pregnancy is actively involved in the metabolic process. It is useful not only for a woman, but also for a child. The daily intake of magnesium for pregnant women is slightly higher than for other people, so additional intake is often necessary.

How is magnesium useful during pregnancy?

Magnesium, especially in combination with vitamin B, normalizes the functioning of all body systems and promotes the absorption of calcium.

  • Strengthens the work of the cardiovascular system;
  • Prevents the deposition of cholesterol;

Taking magnesium is especially important for pregnant women with complaints of insomnia, edema, poor circulation in the extremities, digestive problems, cramps in the muscles of the legs. Also, the drug is indicated for women suffering from high blood pressure.

Regular magnesium intake reduces the risk of premature birth. It also reduces the risk of preeclampsia, a pathology that manifests itself in the third trimester and is life-threatening for the mother and child.

Without a sufficient amount of magnesium, trace elements such as phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and vitamin C are less absorbed.

Starting in the second trimester of pregnancy, some of the magnesium is excreted in the urine, and the body needs it even more.

As a rule, doctors prescribe to women vitamin complexes containing both magnesium and vitamin B6. The drug is available in tablet form. The required dosage should be seen in the instructions or check with your gynecologist. It is best taken with meals. Magnesium should be taken with caution in those suffering from kidney disease.

An overdose of magnesium is also possible. Its main symptoms are nausea, vomiting, loose stools, and increased irritability.

In the diet of a pregnant woman, there should be enough foods containing magnesium. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Buckwheat grain;
  • Nuts: cashews, almonds, hazelnuts;
  • Beans
  • Watermelon.

Slightly less magnesium is found in walnuts, oatmeal, tomato paste, white bread.

Taking magnesium is beneficial at any stage of pregnancy. At an early stage, it improves overall health, which is often complicated by toxicosis and relieves the symptoms of hypertonia – drawing pains in the abdomen. Late – gives the body strength and prevents premature birth.
