Maalox

Maalox is used in disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux in the hiatal hernia, indigestion, heartburn). Incidentally in the treatment of gastric ulcer and / or duodenal ulcer.

ACTION

Maalox is a combined preparation that neutralizes gastric juice.

Maalox – indications and dosage

Maalox is a drug used in disturbances of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as:

  1. gastritis,
  2. indigestion,
  3. heartburn,
  4. stomach and / or duodenal ulcers,
  5. gastroesophageal reflux in the hiatal hernia of the diaphragm

Drug dosage

Maalox is in the form of lozenges or chewable tablets and a suspension for oral use. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation as it may pose a threat to your life or health.

  1. Tablets: 1-2 tablets suck or chew after meals or if you feel pain.
  2. Suspension: 10 ml approx. 90 minutes after a meal or in case of pain; dose max. 140 ml / d.

Maalox and contraindications

There are the following contraindications to taking the preparation:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. severe renal failure.

Maalox – warnings

  1. A doctor should be consulted if symptoms persist after 7 days of treatment.
  2. People with renal insufficiency should be careful when using the drug, as there is a risk of aluminum ions accumulation.
  3. Children under 6 years of age, especially dehydrated or with renal insufficiency, should exercise caution.
  4. Diabetics should be careful because 1 tablet contains 150 mg of sucrose.
  5. Taking the drug for too long can cause hypophosphataemia, as well as kidney failure due to the deposition of ammonium and magnesium phosphate.
  6. Patients with fructose intolerance should not take the drug due to the presence of sorbitol.
  7. The drug in the form of a suspension contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate, which can lead to allergic reactions (especially bronchospasm).
  8. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  9. Caution should be exercised when administering the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy.
  10. Long-term treatment with Maalox is not recommended.

Maalox with other medications

  1. Taking Maalox with quinidine may increase its effect.
  2. Maalox lowers the absorption of the following H2 receptor antagonists: atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, lincosamides, chloroquine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, diflunisal, ethambutol, isoniazid, phenothiazine derivatives, indomethacin, keticoconazole, and penicoconazole .
  3. Concomitant use of polystyrene sulfonate sodium reduces the effect of the drug.
  4. These drugs should be administered 2 hours (in the case of fluoroquinolones, more than 4 hours) before or 1-2 hours after taking the preparation.

Maalox – side effects

During treatment with Maalox, the following side effect may occur:

  1. constipation
  2. diarrhea
  3. nausea,
  4. vomiting,
  5. bright discoloration of the feces.
